Sm—We Overcome by the Word of Our Testimony
1 Samuel 17:32-47; Revelation 12:10-11
How did David defeat Goliath? Three elements that parallel the victorious Saints acclaimed in the Book of Revelation: The Word of our Testimony; the Power of God / the Blood of the Lamb; No Fear of Death.
1. David Overcame By the Word of HisTestimony.
David did not allow himself to be limited by the testimony (words) of other people concerning him:
⁃ To His father, David was a “Gopher”—An Errand Boy (a designated role as subordinate to his brothers’ support)
⁃ To his oldest brother, Eliab, David was a show off and a nuisance to be tolerated. Listen to how he told him off. Your own brother, a fellow believer in God. (1 Samuel 17:28)
But when David’s oldest brother, Eliab, heard David talking to the men, he was angry. “What are you doing around here anyway?” he demanded. “What about those few sheep you’re supposed to be taking care of? I know about your pride and deceit. You just want to see the battle!”
⁃ King Saul Downsized him and then tried to upgrade him with his royal armor. Wow, wrap your head around that dichotomy.
- Two Take Aways: Others fail to see the greatness within you. Why? Because they miss the greatness within themselves—they never activate that faith which relies on substance hoped for and evidence unseen.
Yeah, after Goliath was defeated and the Philistines were on the run, Eliab and all the other Israelites joined the chase…
⁃ There are times you have to go it alone.
⁃ And then there was Goliath…The Accuser of our Brethren
Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was over nine feet tall!
5 He wore a bronze helmet, and his bronze coat of mail [armor made of metal rings or plates joined together flexibly] weighed 125 pounds. 6 He also wore bronze leg armor, and he carried a bronze javelin on his shoulder.
7 The shaft of his spear was as heavy and thick as a weaver’s beam, tipped with an iron spearhead that weighed 15 pounds.[c]
His armor bearer walked ahead of him carrying a shield.
8 Goliath stood and shouted a taunt across to the Israelites. “Why are you all coming out to fight?” he called. “I am the Philistine champion, but you are only the servants of Saul. Choose one man to come down here and fight me! 9 If he kills me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be our slaves! 10 I defy the armies of Israel today! Send me a man who will fight me!” 11 When Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified and deeply shaken.
INTIMIDATION
And I heard a loud voice saying in Heaven, “Now have come salvation and strength, and the Kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ;
for the accuser of our brothers and sisters is cast down,
who accused them before our God day and night. Rev 12:10
Through it all, David overcame by the word of HIS testimony.
David’s testimony was experiential.
Your testimony is your story, your history of overcoming by the help of God.
You can speak to the mountain before you now because of your past victories.
“Whoever speaks to THIS Mountain,’Be removed…’ shall have whatsoever things he asks”
1 John 5:14 “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything accordingly to His will, He hears us.” (Also note vs. 15)
He did not Fear Death.
a. We must not fear death—there are many deaths other than physical death: the death of self is the most significant.
b. If we would truly follow Christ, we must not shrink from the death of self—taking up our cross daily and denying self (the lusts of things, the lust of the flesh, the pride of the world).
King Saul asked: “Who is that boy’s daddy?”
As if knowing who his daddy was would explain the swagger that David had.
Whose Your Daddy?
Do you have His DNA?
If so, let me see your swagger. Let me hear your testimony.
This is the word of our testimony: By virtue of our association with Abba, Father, through Yeshua; by virtue of Yeshua’s nature abiding within us through His Holy Spirit; by virtue of our agreement…; we overcome the enemy so that the Kingdom of God is advanced.
