In the chapters leading up to the eleventh chapter of Romans we have gotten to see the spiritual status of Isreal(Jewish People) and it’s not very good. Chapters 9 and 10 are all about their blunders, backsliding, and blindness.
Chapter Romans 9:30-33 “What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”
They Sought righteousness through force not faith. Their religion and self righteousness could’t save them.
Chapter Romans 10:1-2 “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.”
We see their zeal yet it’s ignorance
Paul raises and addresses a very important question. Is God done with Israel?
His people - Exodus 3:10 “Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.”
1 Kings 6:13 “And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.”
The group of people he’s made promises and covenants with. The people he’d been working with since the very beginning. Delivered the from slavery, fed in the wilderness, led by way of Judges, delivered from captivity. Has God quit on them?
If God quit on them will he quit on us too?
Can we take him at his word?
Promises?
Prophecy?
Truth?
Paul
Paul
Paul first address the issues of God “rejecting” Israel by using his own life as an example
He was Jewish- Romans 11:1 “I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.”
Philippians 3:3-6 “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.”
Even Paul’s salvation experience points to God not being done with Israel
We have never seen Jesus but he did
Look at what he says about his experience
1 Tim 1:16 “Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”
Mirrors what will happen in Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, The spirit of grace and of supplications: And they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, And they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, And shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.”
Future restoration!

The Prophet
A call back to 1 Kings 19- When Elijah though the was the only one yet God had 7000 more
The remnant is saved by grace (like its always been)
Romans 11:5 “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.”
Romans 11:9–10 are cited from Psalm 69:22–23. This psalm is one of the most important of the messianic psalms and is referred to several times in the New Testament. Note especially Romans 11:4, 9, 21–22. Their “table to become a snare” means that their blessings turn into burdens and judgments. This is what happened to Israel: their spiritual blessings should have led them to Christ, but instead they became a snare that kept them from Christ. Their very religious practices and observances became substitutes for the real experience of salvation.
Taking blessings and making them burdens
Sabath, diet, holidays
God is not done with Israel.
He adds the remnant to the church. He will restore Israel!
