Communion:
Confession: I sometimes don’t practice what I preach. I have a hard time slowing down.
I am the guy who is analyzing the lines at Costco and the store. How many things do they have in there cart? Always analyzing which lane on the freeway is moving the quickest.
The devil never rest so either will I. I will rest when I get to heaven.
Is not resting a sin? I think it can be.
If you are not rested you are more susceptible to sin and other temptations. We make dumb decisions when we are tired.
The faster we go the more shallow our conversations become.
Don’t just believe what Jesus believed but live the way Jesus lived.
If Jesus needed to stop and rest in the midst of a chaotic world, with all of the important things He had to do, don’t you think we need rest, too?
Jesus ministry was for only 3 years. But he took time to rest.
1. We need to take time to rest and to grieve a lose.
Jesus loses his cousin John and toke time to grieve.
Matthew 14:13 NIV
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
Feeding of the five thousand.
After a busy season we need to withdraw and get filled back up.
Matthew 14:22–23 NIV
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,
We need to rest and pray when making a big decision.
Luke 6:12–13 NIV
12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:
If anyone ever brings you a business deal or an offer and says you have to act right now or it is gone. Let it go.
I try not to make a big decision when I am tired. I will sleep on it.
Stop working, sit, and learn.
Luke 10:38–39 NIV
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.
Luke 10:40 NIV
40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
Luke 10:41–42 NIV
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
You can’t go wrong taking time out to slow down, rest and set at the feet of Jesus.
Have you ever notice in the scriptures...
Jesus was never in a rush.
John 11:1–7 NIV
1 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” 4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”
Jesus went away to have some personal time with God.
Mark 1:35–37 NIV
35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
When your kids were growing up did they ever try getting your attention when when you were working on something or on the phone. Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, - What!
Mom’s it is okay to have some me time.
Jesus went to parties and was not in a rush to leave.
John 2:1–3 NIV
1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
Matthew 11:28–29 The Message
28 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. 29 Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Prayer: God, help me walk slow enough to experience Jesus fully and love people deeply.
