Devotional reading: Exodus 15:11-21
background scripture: Exodus 14:1-15;21
And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
Exodus 15:11–21 (KJV 1900)
11 Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, The earth swallowed them.
13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: Thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.
14 The people shall hear, and be afraid: Sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.
15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; The mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; All the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.
16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; By the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; Till thy people pass over, O Lord, Till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.
17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, In the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, In the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.
18 The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.
20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
21 And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously; The horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
A. Gods Preeminence
V 11) Who is like unto thee, O Lord? among the gods Who is like thee, glorious in holiness,fearful in praise, doing wonders?
you see that in Exodus 10:21-23 “And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.” this was done to let the eygptians know that thier sun god ra was nothing compared the one and only God.this was to show them that thier little unknown god of sun ra can do nothing over what thier God had put on them total darkness even a darkness they could feel .have you ever been in the dark and feel the darkness everywhere you walk , reach out to it was nothing but darkness you couldnt find any light . and the plagues were judgement against the eygptians Gods just to let them know what im about to put on you your puny Gods (Idols) can do nothing to help you! see Exodus 12:12 “For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.” evens the book of Numbers 33:4 “For the Egyptians buried all their firstborn, which the Lord had smitten among them: upon their gods also the Lord executed judgments.” so you see that both references show that our God is the only God who can do such things as blind you with darkness so you cant see and send palgues upon you that no one can take off .
all this to let the Eygptians know that no matter how many Gods they have there is none like our God who can take away all other gods or Idols our God is holy being unique in all he does!
here are some references to show God is the one and only true God starting in Ex0dus 3:5
then revelations 15: followed by Leviticus 11:44-45 and 1st Peter 1:15-16 “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” and he is Holy and that we should always show reverence to God and all of his woundrous works>
B. Gods Power ( vv,12-13)
first V.12 Thou Stretchedtst out thy right hand the earth swallowed them.
this is showing us how just the right hand of God is so powerful to deliver his people see
Pslams 17:77 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee
;139:10 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me , And thy right hand shall hold me. so you see in this case it is letting us know that the can be swalloed up with just the right hand of God . through all the palgues darkness Gods powerful right hand. just like waters that swallowed up pharoahs army (ref. Exodus 14:21-30 “And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians. And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. And…” )
also there are other times in the future when Korah and 250 like minded rebels were also swallowed up ref. Numbers 16:32 “And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.” this was showering the Egyptians and letting the Iseralites know the power of God. in what only he can do.
V13 13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: Thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.
in this verse its letting us know that Moses is talking to God in song about the mercy he has shown to his people redeeming them so they can be taken to the place which he promised them getting his people out of bondage . even today God is still leading his people not just the Isrealites but all who he has called to be redeemed in Christ to be led out of Sin see (ref. Colossians1:9-14 “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”
and this Holy place was where God was taking back then his people to their holy habitation which was the holy land and this was done through his Powerful hand......
C.The Nations or people fear (vv. 14-16)
V 14a 14 The people shall hear, and be afraid
now things are changed from how Gods power helped protect the Isrealites to how others will Respond to the great power of God and his mighty acts which he preformed for his people NIV says Nations But KJV says People. on how they respond .and all what they saw and heard caused them to be afraid like beiing shakened up by what they knew what God can Do.
V 14b Sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.
now we are talking about how the people of Palestina or philistines see Joshua 13:2-3 “This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri, From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:”
all the names changed throughout time but still talking the same place and still the people of that time.but the result ids the same their response>
they feeling sorrow in this land knowing what was about to happen to them . looking into the future from Gods point of view will take hold of and open your eyes.
v 15a ) 15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed;
The mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them
now these two countries after seeing what God has don for his people they were shaken and amazzed at the power of God knowing that God can do this was just so amazing and they were in awe but if we look at these two regions they were not to be trampled over because of how they came to be in this land see Genesis25:30 “And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.”Genesis 36:1 “Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.” and the people of Moab which was a little east of the dead sea which is from the daughter of lot see Genesis19:36-37 “Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.” saved by the forefathers of Gods promise.
so the Israelites had to go around them and not to bother them, But this was done out of respect they had for each other that they would not disturb them but they saw the mighty works of God and stood in amazement . thanks be to God you see God promise still stands.
15b ) All the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away
now the Canaanites already knew what was going to happen when the Israelites came to Jericho because of the story which was told about the crossing of the red sea and what happen to pharaoh and the soldiers that tried to capture the Israelites . which put fear in the Canaanites .knew what God could do , this is what we should be thinking about what God can do and know that God is on our side thanks be to Jesus . Amen
the rest when we return on next Thursday so that we will sing and praise God for all he does in our lives
this is my Exodus in your past There is a hole left in your soul and God wants to deliver
this is part One of the song to God
V16 16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them;
By the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone;
Till thy people pass over, O LORD,
Till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.
