Galatians 5 Cont.
09-05-2021
Welcome
Intro -
This week we will be finishing Galatians 5
But if you will recall last week we asked you who persuaded you from obeying the truth
Who distracted you
Church we know for a fact that we are to be reading the Bibles ourselves so let me ask you are you reading the Bible yourself?
When I was in seminary, I am sure most of you have heard it but it will be ok
My Theology 1 Professor walked in day 1 of class and asked who had read the Bible cover to cover
Of the about 12 students in class only 2 I think raised their hands to say they had
Then he said something to me that for whatever reason stuck
He said if you expect to stand up and get a degree saying to know what this book says you had better read it, and if you don’t read it you should not get up and get your diploma
So a year and a half later, I went to graduation practice and he was shaking our hands giving us a Bible as we practiced walking across the stage, I told him that that day I had completed my Bible reading so I could get my diploma
So let me ask you this church
For those of you who are Christian
Who claim to know the play book, have you read the play book, are you reading the play book
This morning Paul is going to move into a different area
Galatians 5:13–16 NASB95
13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
Church Paul is calling the churches in Galatia to be aware and on guard
That we are to love one another
As soon as Paul shares that he then reminds them and encourages them to not be at each other’s throats
Take care that you are not consumed by one another
Rather than fighting each other we are to walk by the Spirit
We need to understand that our fight is not against each other
Ephesians 6:12 NASB95
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
To think that the battle is against fellow brothers and sisters in Christ is just plain wrong
We know that our fight is not against each other
So let us stop it
Let us stop the fighting and the back fighting
Let us come together and work together for the purpose of the Gospel
Let us work to unity
1 Corinthians 1:10 NASB95
10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.
We are to be unified
We are to work together
We know that we are be unified as a body of believers
This is how we are to look
There should be no division amounts us
We should have the same mind and the same spirit
That is what the Body of believers is to look like
That is what Paul is telling the churches in Galatia
This is what Paul is telling Maranatha Baptist Fellowship this morning
That there should be no division among you
That we should be one spirit
Some of you may ask how do we do that
Paul answers that question
Galatians 5:16–18 NASB95
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
Instead of the fighting, Paul calls the churches in Galatia to walk by the spirit
When we are walking by the spirit it would make sense that we are not carrying out the things of the flesh
When we are walking by the spirit it would sense that there would be no division among them as a church
Church do you understand that Paul is calling the churches, and calling us to walk in the Spirit
We are to not give into the things of the flesh
But we are to walk by the spirit
That is the Spirit of God
John 14:26 NASB95
26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
God has sent His Spirit that is the Holy Spirit to help us, to guide us
If we are walking with the Holy Spirit then we are not walking by the flesh
Some of you might ask what the things of the flesh are
Galatians 5:18–21 NASB95
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Paul reminds them again they are free from the law
But the things of the flesh are as follows
If you are walking by these things this is walking according to the flesh
The things of the flesh are against God
So if we know the things of the flesh just maybe we need to ensure we know the things of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22–24 NASB95
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
These are the things of the Spirit
This is what we should be modeling our lives after
This is how we should be thinking, talking, living, acting
Because church when we are doing these things
There is unity in the Body
And church when there is unity in the Body these qualities are found
See we are now without excuse to not be a unified body because we know that we should be
We are now without excuse to not be walking in the Spirit
You and I as believers in Jesus Christ have the Spirit of God within us can be walking in the Spirit because the Spirit inside us
Galatians 5:25–26 NASB95
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
Church Paul calls the churches in Galatia that if they are going to live by the SPirit then they should walk by the Spirit
If you say you are believer in Jesus then act like
Pauls says if you are going to live by the Spirit and walk by the Spirit then stop the fighting within the Body
that is what Paul is calling the churches in Galatia to do
I believe that is what he is calling Maranatha todo as well
To live by the Spirit we are to also be walking like it as well
To live by the Spirit means that we have the Holy Spirit inside us
That is to have a personal relationship with Christ
As we move into this time of invitation
If you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship meaning you have never repented from the sin in your life and trusted Jesus to be Lord of your life
We would invite you to the front this morning
You can speak with someone who can show you through scripture that Jesus loves you enough to pay for your debt of sin
That you cannot deal with the sin problem yourself
But if you turn from sin and turn to Jesus you can be a new creation this morning
Or maybe you are here and have a personal relationship with Jesus
But maybe you have been spending to much time walking according to the flesh and need to repent this morning
Or maybe you simple need to spend sometime at the altar praying
the altar is open
