The historical background for this riddle/parable is found in 2 Kings 24:6–20; 2 Chronicles 36:8–16, and Jeremiah 37; 52:1–7.
Why were the Jews being judged for all the past sins of their nation? Ezekiel would declare that it was due to a lack of trust in the Lord, which they had shown by their willingness to rely on Egypt for security and by the corruption of their regent, Zedekiah.
Decoding Ezekiel’s parable:
EAGLE: Babylon/Nebuchadnezzar
TWIG: Jehoiachin
LAND OF MERCHANTS: Babylon
SEED: Jews left in Jerusalem
IT SPROUTED: Zedekiah, puppet king of Judah
ANOTHER EAGLE: Egypt
