You shall not steal.

The previous commandments
Exodus 20:1–14 ESV
And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery.
Exodus 20:15 ESV
“You shall not steal.
Q: What are your thoughts about stealing?
What kinds of things apply to this commandment?
As with all of the commandments each one is special in its own way. Stealing is taking something that does not belong to you.
Taking a belonging from someone else.
Q: If a person or organization owns lots of a particular items, money etc. and you know that if you take a little bit of it and they wont notice and wont even be harmed by it. Is this stealing?
Robin Hood, is he justified in his actions?
Stealing is not just about how you hurt someone else. Its about taking what does not belong to you
Additionally, if someone is already poor and you take steal from them something that they need. That theft is even worse.
Also this commandment specifically also is a commandment against kidnapping and slavery.
Deuteronomy 24:7 ESV
“If a man is found stealing one of his brothers of the people of Israel, and if he treats him as a slave or sells him, then that thief shall die. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
Exodus 20:15 ESV
“You shall not steal.
The commandment to not steal is very closely interconnected with many of the other commandments.
6th - You shall not murder, is the prohibition of taking of someone’s life
7th - You shall no commit adultery, is the prohibition of taking someone else’s wife
10 - You shall not covet, is the desire to take something that belongs to another.
2 - You shall not make idols, is the prohibition of taking God’s glory and worship and giving it to another.
Ephesians 4:28 ESV
Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
This commandment speaks to ownership and property rights.
Anyone know the story of Les-Miserable?
The man was starving, poverty was throughout France and a man stole a loaf of bread to feed his family and was sent to prison for 20 years.
Thoughts?
Proverbs 30:8–9 ESV
Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.
Proverbs 30:8–9 NASB95
Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.
What about the government? Paying taxes.
Mark 12:13–17 ESV
And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk. And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.
