After the affairs of Judah and Tamar the narrative once again returns to JOSEPH.
Joseph was roughly 17 years old when he was sold as a slave.
He was 30 when he began to work for Pharaoh Gen. 41:46
Although Joseph was not a preincarnate Christ he is a typology of the Savior.
Joseph was a man of sin (Romans 3:10). However, in the Biblical narrative he is sinless in mention.
He was sent from His home land to another to prepare the way and bring life to those whom he loved.
Joseph was the beloved son. Matt. 3:17
Matthew 3:17 ESV
and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
His own rejected him John 1.11
John 1:11 ESV
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
He became a servant. Philippians 2:7
Philippians 2:7 ESV
but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
After death he brought life. Matt. 1.21
Matthew 1:21 ESV
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
He was wrongfully accused and bore the shame of his brothers. Gen. 37:25-28
Genesis 37:25–28 ESV
Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.
Genesis 37:36 ESV
Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.
He was brought to a place of highest honor. Gen 41:37-44
Genesis 41:37–44 ESV
This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his servants. And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you.” And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck. And he made him ride in his second chariot. And they called out before him, “Bow the knee!” Thus he set him over all the land of Egypt. Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no one shall lift up hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
Philippians 2:9 ESV
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
And there are many more similarities that we will mention as we continue this study.
In Genesis 19:19 Lot had sought for be found with favor of the angels who led hin out of Sodom. In Genesis 33:10 Jacob had sought favor of his brother Esau.
Here In Genesis 39:4 Joseph has found favor that he did not seek. Matt. 23:12
Matthew 23:12 ESV
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Joseph’s righteousness led to blessings upon others.
Joseph recognized his blessings, and his boundaries. v. 8-9
He was falsely accused and maliciously imprisoned.
Even in prison the Lord had a plan for Joseph. vs 22
The contrast is in Joseph and Judah.
Joseph honored God and God honored Joseph.
Judah lived in sin while Joseph lived by integrity
Jospeh suffered at the start was dies under blessings.
Judah was blessed at the start but dies in shame.
