‘The Call to Walk Worthy’
September 5, 2021
Call to Worship:
Psalm 96:1–3 NASB95
Sing to the Lord a new song; Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day. Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
Ephesians 4:1-6
“Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, exhort you to walk worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.”
Introduction:
Now that Paul through prayerful worship has revealed the Power of the Spirit to be filled up unto the Fullness of God,
He urges believers to walk worthy of the calling:
But by way of introduction, let’s consider the first few words of verse 1
The English text begins with the word, ‘Therefore’- (Actually the second Greek word)
‘Therefore’ – a Conjunction – ‘indicating that follows from another necessarily’ - ‘accordingly’
So, when we see this word, we should always consider from what it follows,
Because what the writer is about to write, is based on what precedes
So, in a sense, it refers make to all that has been said (Ch. 1-3),
But there’s a special relationship to Paul prayer for these believers
First, let’s consider the whole (Ch. 1-3):
The Apostle Paul has gloriously revealed God’s plan to unite all into one body – Christ
God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies
He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world
Making us holy and blameless before Him
He predestined us to be son-placed
To be to the praise of His glory
He has redeemed us through Christ’s blood
Forgiving our sins according to the riches of His grace
Which he lavished on us
He made known to us the mystery of His will to unite all things in Him,
In Heaven and on earth
In Him we have obtained an inheritance
Have been sealed by the Holy Spirit,
Who is the down-payment of our inheritance
He has enlightened the eyes of our hearts
Giving us the sure hope of His calling
The riches of His glorious inheritance
And the immeasurable greatness of His power
What is the same power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in the
Heavenlies
God made Christ, head over the church,
Which is the fullness of Him who fills all in all
