What are we treasuring in our lives? What is at the center of our hearts? It could be friendships and dating relationships. Sports or videogames. Your public reputation, whether it be on social media or at school or even in general. Maybe, its doing good to please people. I am a huge people pleaser. I want people to feel loved and I want to be loved by people. I would say that sometimes that can be where I can fall.
Jesus tells us this parable about a treasure that was hidden in the field, and a man found it. And in his joy, he went and sold everything he had and buys that field.
The man probably had some really nice things. Sweet decor, nice furniture. But he found this treasure that he loved and wanted even more than what he had. And he gave all he had up in order to have the treasure in the field.
I am reminded about what Paul said in Philippians 3:7
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
Paul had it all. He was a very influential person in the Jewish community because of his background. Hebrew of Hebrews, he said “If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more.”
But Paul counts it all as a loss, because Christ is greater. Christ is the treasure that is in the field, nothing else even compares to Christ. No followers, no money, no touchdowns, no homeruns, no highscores can even compare to the greatness in having Jesus in our hearts.
And it gets better. Because Christ thinks the same with you. Christ gave everything so he can have you.
Christ purchased us by giving everything up.
Christ purchased us by giving everything up.
This is how much Jesus loves us. He is the man who stumbled on this treasure, that is us, and He valued us so much that He then, to purchase us, sold everything He had, gave it all up to purchase us.
What should our reaction be? Our reaction should be the same.
What does this mean for us?
What does this mean for us?
I am not telling everyone to go sell all of your parents stuff, or your stuff. I am not saying to quit sports or delete social media or unfriend people, but we are called to give all of our heart to God. Just like the treasure in the field, we give everything
