INTRO: ASK: the most famous person you ever met? You demenor prob changed.
23 During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.
King of Egypt died - God doesn’t die, man does.
Isreal groaned - Roman 8:25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because[a] the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
cried out for help -
24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.
heard their growing and remembered - The groaning caused God to remember. He waited until his people called out before making a move.
God heard, God saw, and God knew - God knows..... omnipresence of God means he is never far away. He had heard and saw, but they were still waiting.
I know - what I say to my child after he is hurting.
If you want to encounter God, then cry out to Him. (Exodus 2:23-25)
If you want to encounter God, then cry out to Him. (Exodus 2:23-25)
We often say that God isn’t there. But have we actually cried out to him?
When you encounter God, remember who you are and who He is. (Exodus 3:1-6)
When you encounter God, remember who you are and who He is. (Exodus 3:1-6)
1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
keeping his flock - not a good job for an Eygptian . -
Horeb - They were going to come back here. Not the mountain of God based on what has happened, but will happen. Likely same as Mt. Sinai - where the 10 commandments came down.
2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.
THE angel of the Lord - usually Jesus. Christophany.
why fire? - not sure, maybe looks forward to Pentecost.....Likely a menorah.
bush was burning, yet it was not consumed -
3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”
HAHA - He said this, but was all alone. He was speaking to sheep haha. he was lonely.
4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.”
um…hello? - ACT out. .... hearing your name illustration??????
5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”
Do not come near -
holy ground - Moses could not come near and took his feet off because holiness.
take your sandals off - eastern culture, you take shoes off. In temples you take shoes off. He was entering God’s house. TEMPLES washed your feet and hands.
He was a making a temple right there.
Shows the proper respect you give to God. This use to mean, dress nicely. but God does not care about that. He cares about the heart....
Not really about the church, but this means prepare your heart for church.
ILLUSTRATION - Take shoes off.
6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
Ansesters were more important than you. - starts personal, father. Your Dad loved me. Comforting words.
God of Jacob - not Israel. He was the God of Jacob even when he failed.
Moses hid his face - appropriate response when contacting something holy.
He was afraid to look at God - He knew his sin. and his response was same as Adam and Eve - hide my face.
When You encounter God, remember He knows and He cares. (Exodus 3:7-9)
When You encounter God, remember He knows and He cares. (Exodus 3:7-9)
7 Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings,
I have seen affliction - God was watching the whole time. He knew the sufferings.
8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
I have come down - not Moses, it was God the whole time. Past tense. He hasn’t done it yet, but it was as good as done.
milk and honey - delicacy.
All those nations, giving indication on where they were going to go. He couldn’t just give him the latitude.
9 And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.
heard and seen. - God knows what your going through.
After you encounter God, He will empower you. (Exodus 3:10-12)
After you encounter God, He will empower you. (Exodus 3:10-12)
10 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”
Imagine being told by God that you were going to lead 3 million people out of slavery to a new land.
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
Who am I? I can’t do this. ..If you feel like you are capable of doing what God has called you to, then its to small.
12 He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
I will be with you. - Its not you Moses, its me. When God calls you to something, its not you that is going to be doing it.
the sign - is after he did it!!! How you will know I am with you, you will do then see.
Dont’ wait for God to give you a sign, start to obey him now and see how God moves.
