I. The Ordination of The Lord's Faithful. Vs.13
They were God called in private. v.13
13 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom They werehe would: and they came unto him.
“calleth…whom he would” - Jesus still does.
“they came unto him” - And they still do!
They were God called to preach. v.14
14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
“ordained...preach” - These still go together.
“preach” - Luke 24:47 is what Jesus Himself said they were to preach.
“ordained” - In John 15:16 Jesus reminded these men that HE ordained them.
“forth” is changed to “out” by the ESV, NIV, NLT, NKJV, HCSB, etc.
They were God called to have power. v.15
15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
“to have power” - Power that was based on Jesus’ touch not anyone else’s faith.
“power” is what Jesus promised all believers in Acts 1:8
“power” is changed to “authority” by the ESV, NIV, NLT, HCSB, etc.

II. The Distinction of The Lord's Followers. Vs.16-19
The Troubled disciple. v.16
16 And Simon he surnamed Peter;
Simon: Simon - That Hears; That Obeys
Peter - A Rock Or Stone. Peter listed himself as a servant before he listed himself as an apostle in 2 Peter 1:1. Life gets in focus more as we get older and the longer we serve Him (the sweeter He grows)
“These are the twelve he chose/appointed” is added by ESV, NIV, NLT, HCSB
The trouble making disciples. v.17
17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:
James: (Same As Jacob) That Supplants, Undermines; The Heel (James lists himself as a servant as well in James 1:1)
Zebedee: Abundant; Portion
John: The Grace Or Mercy Of The Lord
Boanerges: Son Of Thunder
The tame disciples. v.18
18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,
Andrew: A Strong Man
Phillip: Warlike; A Lover Of Horses
Bartholomew: A Son That Suspends The Waters
Matthew: Given; A Reward
Thomas: Twin
James: (Same As Jacob) That Supplants, Undermines; The Heel
Alphaeus: less sorrowful (from Strongs G253)
Thaddaeus (also known as Jude): child of one's heart (Thayers)
Simon: That Hears; That Obeys
Canaanite:
The traitor disciple. v.19
19 And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house.
Judas: (Jude, Same As Judah) The Praise Of The Lord; Confession
Iscariot: A Man Of Murder; A Hireling (Matthew 26:14-16, 47)
(ABE Mk by Butler): “One, of course, was a phony; and we still have that kind around today. They look okay but sooner or later their lack of sincerity comes to the surface and reveals itself in opposing Christ.”
“and they went into an house” - removed by the ESV, NIV, NLT, NKJV, HCSB and added into v.20
III. The Intention of The Lord's Friends. Vs.20-21
III. The Intention of The Lord's Friends. Vs.20-21
They brought a crowd. v.20
20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
As in v.9 the people crowded around Jesus.
They thought Jesus was crazy. v.21
21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
“he is beside himself” - Every born again believer can remember when their friends said this about them.
“friends” is changed to “family” or “his own people” in the ESV, NIV, NLT, NKJV, HCSB
