Intro- 99 Problems

Orr. . sunday school
Dr. Netters passing, Mt. Vernon family. . Pastor Watkins
The sermon on the mount calls us to a different way of Living; 99 1/2 Won’t DO.
Lord i’m running trying to make 100 because 99 1/2 won’t do- Hezekiah Walker
Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
There is a misnomer in the Christian community which assumes a path to heaven based on particulars being expressed as the way to go.
The right vocabulary- all the cliches. . “blessed and highly favored, to blessed to be stressed, God is Good all the time. . . , Hallelujuah- Madea version. This assumes your speech is Holy so you are ok.
The Right Social circles- don’t hang out with people who: smoke, sip, and sex. Cigarettes, cigars, drink. This assumes if I’m with the right people then I’m good.
Family connections- I grew up in a great CHristian home . Parents taught in church, served in church, gave in church, etc.
Jesus uplifts for us something that is unpopular; it is unusual to His audience then and now. I fear this is going to upset some people so I am prepared with secret service agents to watch over me for the next 3 weeks.
Jesus is very candid; Religious lip service is not enough. Your words about Him and to Him is not enough. If you have been with us as we have been on this survey on the Sermon on the Mount; this is nothing new. If your heart is not right, your words and actions, activities are pointless. Wearing the t-shirt (Jesus is my homeboy, God is Dope). . that ain’t getting you into the kingdom if your heart believes otherwise.
The tragedy in the CHurch is that we have raised people to believe in cheap Grace; we lift up this idea that if i do more good it (the doing) will outshine the bad stuff. And in doing so, I receive my get out of jail card (if you will).
Well if you do something wrong, just sit on the Mourners bench.
Well if you get caught up in something, just go to the alter and give you heart to Christ AGAIN.
All this stuff and empty rituals (Marneze Davis) don’t amount to anything if your heart is not in the right place.
Nothing wrong with the mourners bench if you are sincere about this issue and turn away from your sin.
Nothing wrong with going to the altar if you are seriously bringing you concerns and walk-away with a renewed sense of life.
However, we just go and leave and go and leave and go and leave and. . . NO heart change.
Jesus says everyone saying “Lord Lord” ain’t getting in.... wow! He said weeks ago. . narrow is the way and few will enter. . Oh SNAP!!!
Last week He tells us to watch out for false prophets. . . and to see the fruit they bear.
This week Jesus says; for those who don’t have a true relationship with Him. . . . Depart from me i never knew you. . . Oh SNap!!!

Renounced- v.21

Matthew 7:21 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
John stott says this-
John Stott has noted that this confession is remarkable on four points. First, it is polite. They address Christ as “Lord.” Even today that is a courteous, tolerant way to refer to Christ. Second, the confession is orthodox. The word “Lord” (kurios) can mean “Sir,” but it is also a divine title. The context with its allusions to God as Christ’s Father and Christ as Judge demands that we see it as the latter—God. Third, the confession is fervent. “Lord, Lord” is an appellation of enthusiasm and zeal. Fourth, the confession is public. These professing believers did not make some private confession of allegiance to Christ but did it in front of everyone. Moreover, they even did public works in the name of Christ. This is a model confession, a beautiful one. So what is wrong with it? Nothing! It would be wonderful if we all would make confessions like this.
whats the problem?- Correct belief will not get us into heaven.
Paul says this in Romans 10- we must have faith. . . Confess with your mouth and Believe in your heart!!!
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Many people think by having an Intellectual understanding will get them into the kingdom. . it will not. . never have . . never will.
it is those who have a clean hands and pure heart. . it is those who worship in spirit and in truth. It is those who are not just doing Lip service, rather who lives out doing the Will of God.
On that day that is to be glorious, it will be terrifying. . Not everyone saying Lord Lord will get in.
None but the righteous shall see God, gotta live Holy, gotta live right. . if you want to see Jesus over there. . get right church and lets Go home.
Love that song
how does this happen? you must be Born again!!! My father in law, Clim, would always joke about having all the intellect and degrees and getting smart and stuff.
He would say. . “the masters and doctorates. . law degrees and stuff is fine. . the only thing that matters is if you Have Your B.A- Born Again. . .
You probably remember hearing those when in the days of old when guest teachers or preachers would be introduced to the congregation..
the host pastor would lift up all of their accolades and stuff. . then would make a hard turn and say none of that matters. . . Because they Got the BA-Born again.
Look. . john 3 tells us this, we must be born again.
if we are not born again we can’t SEE the Kingdom nor Enter the Kingdom
John 3:3–6 ESV
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Reality Check- v. 22

Jesus adds insult to injury- he names ways have served in someway
Matthew 7:22 ESV
On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’
prophesy-
First they asked, “did we not prophesy?” The word signifies speaking in the name of God, which may be meant in the sense that they revealed what is hidden or that they foretold the future (their claim would be that they could not do this in the name of Jesus unless Jesus approved).
cast out demons-
Second, they said that they had cast out demons. In secular Greek the word for “demon” could mean a deity.
in the New Testament demons were beings who occupied a position somewhere between people and God and were especially linked with Satan. In the Gospels their deeds are evil, and they sometimes bring striking physical limitations to people in whom they make their dwelling. Jesus expelled demons from sufferers on a number of occasions, and exorcisms are here regarded as meritorious works, done in the name and the spirit of Jesus.
mighty works-
Mighty works are miracles (the term is often used of Jesus’ healing miracles), though there is no indication of precisely what form the miracles of the false teachers took. But to do any kind of miracle in Jesus’ name is surely something that might be pleaded on Judgment Day?
These are some outstanding things . . .but the Bible speaks of Lying wonders
2 Thessalonians 2:9 ESV
The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,

Rejection- I never knew you v.23

Matthew 7:23 ESV
And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
no acknowledgement
He will say … plainly, which leads into his verdict of total rejection. “I never knew you” (cf. 25:12) does not, of course, mean that he was ignorant of their existence, but rather that he never acknowledged them; he never recognized them as what they claimed to be (Knox, “You were never friends of mine”).
Psalm 6:8 ESV
Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
get out of my sight
Lawlessness - not occasional but habitual
You who work renders a participle that conveys the meaning of habitual practice; they are not condemned for an occasional error but for consistent wrongdoing. Lawlessness is basically the rejection of the law of God. The word is often translated in terms of wrongdoing (“evildoers”), which is, of course, involved. But the term points to a refusal to submit to the law of God; all the wrongdoing follows inevitably from this refusal
Jean val jean in Les Mes
starts off as a habitual liar, thief. . experiences the grace of the Bishop; and it changes his life. He becomes productive
we too can experience the same. . when we fully surrender all to Christ.
