Intro

major themes of foreshadowing
why does God choose leaders he knows will fail?

Rejection of Eli

offerings and Eli’s sons
Eli rebukes them but it is too late to change them- Samuel is there in the moment to show the transition
The man of God- Eli’s death foreshadowed
Abusing the sacrifice, the punishment is death for all of them for turning God’s people away from him

Calling of Samuel

the word of the LORD comes through another man who is of God to Eli
God speaks directly to Samuel, which hasn’t been done for a few generations
the place where the ark is
he grew close to the LORD and all of Israel knew of his relationship with God- he becomes the judge

Application

what does it mean that we have a relationship with God?
Eli and his sons claimed to have one and were in the correct position, but they used it for their selves and turned people away from God
Samuel heard God from a young age and grew close to him and everyone knew it
It’s one thing to know God’s word and be in the right place
It is a whole other thing to hear the word of God and know it and share even the most difficult things about it with people
