History.

They are to follow the rules of God. Because of a covenant that the Lord made with the people in Horeb.
These commandments were giving directly by God in the mountain. Moses was the mediator for the people of Israel.
And the words he spoke gave confidence that they should listen to the Lord.
The law was given so we could Love God and love others. ( only part of the bible written by only God ) These laws can be seen all though-out the new and old testaments.
You shall have no other God’s before me. ( the Hebrew can also mean besides me ) Internal commandment ( most broken commandment ) ( whatever we love, seek, after and serve can become our Gods) ( one day all will worship and acknowledge him ) Phil 2:9-11 “9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” ( no other God’s exist Isaiah 45:21 “21 Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, the Lord? And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me.” ) ( Things that violate these things are atheism, other regions, cults, ect.. )
You shall not make idols. ( what idols do we worship ) ( external commandment ) Creating other God’s cause us to worship God improperly. ( Lev 10:1-7 “1 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them. 2 And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’ ” And Aaron held his peace. 4 And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near; carry your brothers away from the front of the sanctuary and out of the camp.” 5 So they came near and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said. 6 And Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar his sons, “Do not let the hair of your heads hang loose, and do not tear your clothes, lest you die, and wrath come upon all the congregation; but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the bu…” God cares how we worship him. ( does this mean we cannot have Christian art? certainly not, these things point us to God, and not the art itself ) This can be summed up as worship me properly in your external worship John 4:24 “24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” proper external worship is not just on sunday, but all week long… ( we worship God externally in ways such as baptism, ordinances, worship serves, fasting, but even these things done improperly can violate this commandments.
You shall not use the Lord’s name in vain. ( verbal worship of God ) ( this is the misuse of Gods name in any way ) ( this is speaking of the Lords name is an empty, frivolous ( not having any serious purpose or value, insincere. ) ( any false information about God) ( Is not just violated by words, can be violated by lifestyle.) ( For us that means use God’s name properly, revere God ) ( Jesus took this seriously in the Lords prayer ( Matthew 6:9) ( believers pray in Jesus name, and to do so with bad motives, or mindlessly is a violation of this commandment ) ( using his name is false teaching is taking it in vain ) (common thing we see today is the Lord told me to do this… Today we see this is things like blessings, swearing, confessing, oath-taking, praying, cursing, , hypocrisy, heresy, claims of extra, biblical revelation.
You shall remember the Sabbath ( temporal worship ) ( longest ten commandment ) 1 of only 2 commandments that are stated positively ) ( differently stated in Deuteronomy than in Exodus 20:8-11 “8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” Exodus rest, Duet talks about redemption ( God taught the Sabbath during creation week Gen 2:1-3 “1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” ( this is something the people already did thats why he says remember the Sabbath. ) Jesus taught the Sabbath was made for man ( Sabbath is a sign of our eternal rest ) Ezek 20:12,20 “20 and keep my Sabbaths holy that they may be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’” ( this does call us for a regular day of worship, This early church worshiped on Sunday, Acts 20:7 “7 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight.” Heb 4:9-10 “9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.” All of Jesus post resurrected appearances occured on Sunday, The Holy Spirit came on Sunday. ( practical reasons for keeping the Sabbath, Resting helps us realize that God is our ultimate source, not work, allows us to enjoy or work, resting helps to mitigate the effects of the fall, which turn work into toil. Things that we deal with are labor issues, recreation, employee, employer relationships, public worship, private worship, and retirement.
Honor our parents.
Do not murder.
Do not commit adultery.
Do not steal
do not bear false testimony. God is “the God of truth” (Isa 65:16). His words are true (Ps 119:142, 151), and he hates “a lying tongue” and “a false witness who pours out lies” (Prov 6:17, 19). If a witness cannot establish a charge made before the authorities but is shown to be a liar, that witness must pay the penalty that he had sought against the person who was charged with the crime (Deut 19:15–21).’
Do not covet.
As a whole what is the biggest struggle you have, and how can Christ satisfy those struggles?
verse 32… A walk with the Lord is a careful walk. ( a strait walk ) not a walk that wavers.
verse 33. Implications of walking in the way of the Lord. life, and protection.
