Let’s recap from last week for a minute
_________
Forbearance- God passes over our former sins and instead gives us a better deal (eternal life)
Grace doesn’t cancel justice, it executes justice on God
Grace is free but it isnt cheap.
Jesus’ blood is the propitiation
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
Ch. 1-3 Gods wrath is for all who sin, except those under the blood of Jesus. He passes over those.
So the unjustified deal with Gods wrath, not the justified.
______________
So should we fear God now?
Yes and no.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
And for those that are not covered by the blood of Jesus and are justified by him, then yes.
But what about christians?
There is always a fear of God. But we no longer fear his wrath!!!
13 So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, “Shall three years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now consider, and decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.” 14 Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.”
15 So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning until the appointed time. And there died of the people from Dan to Beersheba 70,000 men.
We are simply talking about the release of fear of Gods wrath.
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
We no longer operate under the fear that God will strike us down.
Difference between wrath and discipline
Should we feel guilty or convicted? Should we feel shame and regret?
5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?
“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
nor be weary when reproved by him.
6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and chastises every son whom he receives.”
7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
Discipline produces fruits of the spirit (many call this feeling convicted)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Guilt comes from the enemy and produces shame, depression, condemnation, and death.
9 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.
10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
Do not trust our feelings, only truth!!!
Go over the guilt cycle
Guilt cycle-
Romans 3:23 Romans 8:1 Romans 7
Sin------------> Guilt -------> Separation/depression-------> Sin
Romans 8:13 Romans 8:1 Romans 8:35 --------> Life
Romans 2:4 gods kindness leads to repentance
4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
How do we know which we are?
How do we handle sin? Do we love our sin or hate it?
15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
Do you hate your sin?
Or do you love it?
Or are you just ignorant to it?
Non believers sin cycle is just sin and if it hurts someone they may feel guilty
A believer repents.
