Funeral Devotional
I got to know Alan a little bit over the last 3 1/2 years. I met him when He came to church. Alan was a bit on the quiet side but he was friendly and quick to extend his right hand of fellowship.
As you know, Alan worked with electricity. When we had issues with our lights in the church, Alan was willing and quick to climb up on the scaffolding and get to work. I can’t remember if it was seven or eight ballasts that he changed out the first time but there weren’t many left to do after Alan had completed his work the second time. He had one more that he wanted to do, but as circumstances would have it, it wasn’t meant to be.
He told me that he felt that that was one of the things that he could do to help around the church, and we are very thankful that he was willing.
Today, I’m here to share with you about somebody that is also involved in the trades.
John 14:1–6 (NIV)
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
When we lose a family member or a friend, it’s never easy. Maybe it’s because we never got to say goodbye or we didn’t expect it, or if you had known, you might have just wanted to tell them that you loved them one more time.
If this is all that there is to this life, if we die and are buried and in a generation, we are just a name on a plaque or a tombstone, it can be very depressing.
I want to encourage you today that this isn’t all that there is. There is hope
