Why am I telling you about this old Holy Day?

3. It is special
3. It is special
It is considered to be the most holy day in the Jewish biblical calendar
It is one of the 7 Holy day / holidays God said is His:
Lev 23:2 ““Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts.”
God gave 7 holy days to His people on mt. Sinai

akopher, which means a ransom of money. In Exodus 21:30 the law allows that a monetary ransom be paid for to save life, except num 35.31. if u kill no ransum
something has to die.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’
jesus blood:
• is a token of the New Covenant (Matthew 26:28, Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:25).
• gives life (John 6:54).
• brings redemption (Ephesians 1:7).
• makes propitiation (Romans 3:25).
• justifies (Romans 5:9).
• provides access through forgiveness (Colossians 1:14, Ephesians 1:7, 1 John 1:9, Ephesians 2:13).
• provides reconciliation (Colossians 1:19-20).
• provides cleansing (1 John 1:7).
• makes us overcomers (Revelation 12:11).
Not only is this feast to be celbrated forever Lev 23:31)
However the Jews forever didnt mean endless time like the Greeks thought
Jews viewed lasting from age to age.
However God wanted them to understand forever is endless so
in the NT the Word for forever is aion ton aionon (ages of ages)
but because the the Jews couldnt concept endless time
The Jews believed that the Day of Atonement would no longer be celebrated
when a new age of forgiveness dawned, and the old age passed away.
“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
the Jews thought that each Holy Day was to be celebrated each year forever until this new age of forgiveness, making the day of atonement fulfilled.
It is also prophetic and speaks towards the future.
The 4 Elements of Yom Kippur
The 4 Elements of Yom Kippur
all seen in
Leviticus 23:27–28 (NKJV)
“Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God.
1. Holy Convocation
1. Holy Convocation
Holy (qo-das) - set apart and sacrred.
Convocation (miq-ra) - gathering.
So a set apart and sacrred gathring.
-Church literally is that.
Church just means gathering.
But youre not sacred, or holy, or righteouss
Yeah you are right you are not.
Jesus is.
And because of Jesus you can be called a Saint.
No because of anything you do
but because of what Jesus did
but when sinning Saints act, think, or speak as if they are sacred
because of what they have done, or not done
God calls it hypocricy
Anyone here a hypocrite?
Hypocricy is when you give an appearance that you are holier then reality?
I dont know it amazes how few people up for prayer.
I know I need it
It amazes how many people seek to be leaders of the church then leading their own families closer to Jesus.
A hypocrite doesnt want people to know they are a hypocrite.
because its all about the appearance.
This is what God says to Hypocties that gather:
The Gathering of hypocrites God hates.
Isaiah 1:13 “Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies— I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.”
When there is sin God hates when we gather acting like were part of something sacred and holy.
“I hate, I despise your feast days,
And I do not savor your sacred assemblies.
The Bible calls this hypocrisy:
so this was a time to not be fake.
to gather with a genuine love for God, and His people.
However our hearts can be decietful (Jer 17:9)
So the second element in this Holy Day is:
2. Allict your Souls
2. Allict your Souls
To bow your soul.
did you know in the orginal language of the NeW Testament the Word for worship is
Proskyneo
it means to bow down like how a dog bows down to eat from his masters feet.
3. Offer an Offering
3. Offer an Offering
4. Do Not Work
4. Do Not Work
6. DAY OF ATONEMENT - “Yom Kippur” - The Day of Atonement Leviticus 23:26-32 (
Definition
Atonement means - to cover over, or pacify. (It didn't permanently removed sin, but it pacified the need for judgment.) Timing
happened once a year on the 10th of the Jewish month of Tishri
so it was 10 days after Feast of Trumpets
according to Jews the Feast of Trumpets and Day of Atonement have a connection.
because the feast of trumpets spoke of repentance and the Day of atonement spoke of the forgiveness of sins.
which is exactly the common teaching of the Old and New Testament
Repentance must come before sacrifice.
Purpose
It was a picture of the covering of the sins of the nation.
But it looked forward to the greater permanent removal of sin of the individual.
How It Was Celebrated
In between Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement there was a time called the Yomim Noraʾim, (The Days of Awe)
This was when the Jews would review their relationship with God and others
When reviewing their relationship with God
they would spend these days looking inward,
to see how their inner life might be more pleasing to God. When reviewing their personal relationships with others
forgiveness and restitution would be made. On the day of atonement
In Leviticus 23 it states that on the Day of Atonement Israel is to “humble your soul.”
This is taken (based on the Hebrew word oni) to mean “fast”.
In the context of Isaiah 58:5, this word is used specifically for going without food.
So the Jews would fast for this feast (for more info on the jewish fast ask me, (Kasdan, B. (2007). God’s appointed times: a practical guide for understanding and celebrating the Biblical holidays (2nd ed.). Clarksville, MD: Messianic Jewish Publishers.) The Jews would attend a service.
A part of the service included the reading of Isaiah 61
Some of the classical rabbis believed this passage of Isaiah 61 would be the very words the Messiah would speak to Israel when He came
(Lexicon, Rabbi David Kimchi, as quoted in A Manual of Christian Evidences For Jewish People, Vol. 2, p.76). The fact that Isaiah 61 speaks of the Messiah
led other rabbis to believe that the Messiah would appear on a very special Day of Atonement in the Year of Jubilee (see Leviticus 25:10). Here is a quote from a ancient rabbi who believed this
“The World will endure not less than 85 Jubilees, and in the last jubilee the Messiah, Son of David, will come (Talmud Sanhedrin 97b).” Now in Luke 4:16–22 Jesus goes into a service… and reads Isaiah 61 to the people.
So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
And the people understand, and say in verse 22 “isnt this the son of Joseph”
Remember that they expected the Messiah to read this, and remember they knew the Messiah was going to come from David.
So they understood what Jesus was saying But they didn't know that Joseph came from the line of David. and they rejected Jesus. What is interesting is that after the temple was destroyed in 70 AD
they stopped reading Isaiah 61 But what they read today as a replacement is very interesting.
They read Isaiah 53 - a chapter that describes the Messiah. I think God is trying to tell them something. It is crazy they missed Jesus in their service in Isaiah 61 then,
and they are missing Jesus now in Isaiah 53. Another part of the service is seen in Leviticus 16 goes into detail about the ceremony,
Which is centered on the sacrifices of two goats
One goat, called Chatat was to be slain as a blood sacrifice to symbolically cover the sins of Israel. The other goat, called Azazel, or Scapegoat, would be brought before the priest.
The priest would lay his hands on the head of the goat as he confessed the sins of the people.
(remember laying of hands symbolized a transferor sins. But instead of killing this animal, the goat would be set free in the wilderness
symbolizing taking the sins of the nation out from their midst.
I have heard that there would be a watchman who watch the scapegoat until it was out of his sight.. then he would announce it is gone. which reminds me of Psalm 103:12 “12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.” The Day of Atonement ends with an important Neilah service (the closing of the gates).
The final blast of the shofar is sounded.
It is thought that the fate of each individual is sealed at that time for the upcoming year. Then they would break their fast in the break-the-fast meal.
First they had a taste of wine.
Interesting that Jesus who is the fulfillment of this feast said “He will not drink this wine until He is with them in Heaven” (Matthew 26:29)…
So Jesus in a sense Jesus doesn't break the fast…or end the feast
Teaching us that with Jesus
the Day of Atonement doesn't end!!! PTL!!! Salvation is eternal with Jesus. Next, the sweet challah or honeycake is eaten as a reminder of the sweet new year that we hope to experience. For most Jews, this is at best an optimistic hope that sins have been atoned for.
But believers in Jesus can rejoice in the confidence that He, has paid the price that God required. When the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD celebrating the feast has become difficult (there are 3 different views on how to celebrate)
Some Rabbis from the first century (in Jesus time) to now
decided to make substitutions to fill the gap for a missing Temple.
Tefilah (prayer), Teshuvah (repentance) and Tzedakah (charity) replace sacrifices in the modern observance of Yom Kippur.
This is why the modern observance is so different than it was in biblical times.
Today they are missing the main theme of atonement.
Interesting how they can still do other feasts but not not this one that speaks of forgiveness of sin. (as Jesus said “I am the Way,) Other Orthodox Jewish sects
Still see the need for a Temple and animal sacrifices to be revived in Israel.
So in the “Temple Mount” in Jerusalem they
are reproducing the holy vessels and priestly garments to prepare for the coming Temple. They have attempted to place the first cornerstone on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, They strongly believe that the temple will be rebuilt soon! This is scary because we know that the anti -Christ will rebuild the temple and demand to be worshiped (Daniel 9:27; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4; Mark 13:14; Matthew 24:15) Messianic Jews - realize that Jesus removed the need for the day of atonement,
because He has given those who believe in Him everlasting life. To learn how messianic Jews celebrate this feast let me know.
for crafts and music sheets let me know. Summary
This holy day is all about atonement. But this holy day has been replaced by a holy everlasting life through Jesus. Represent
The church saved by Christ - (a new life in Christ)
One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind.
