Believing Faith
John in his Gospel records seven miracles:
Changing Water into Wine (2:1-11)
Jesus makes all things new
We submit our request to him and leave it in his hands
Healing an officials son in Capernaum (4:46-54)
Trusting Jesus as God
Healing the invalid at the pool in Bethesda (5:1-18)
Feeding the 5000 near the sea of Galilee (6:5-14)
Waling on water in the sea of Galilee (6:16-21)
Healing the blink man in Jerusalem (9:1-7)
Raising the Lazarus from the dead in Bethany (11:1-45)
So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

Jesus returns to the scene of his first miracle, this completes a circle
cana, samaria, cana
His popularity has increased, word has spread of the miracle
Crisis Faith
When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
This was a 13mile trip the man was asking Jesus to make. This was his last hope, his son was dying
He requested that Jesus come to his house to perform the miracle
1 - There’s no indication that the man considered Jesus anything more than a healer
2 - He assumed that Jesus had to physically be present, and that if the boy died it would be too late.
So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”
correcting the mans faith
This is the only place where “wonders” is used in John’s gospel
Jesus is indicating that people only wanted to see him do miracles the the spectacle of it. the wonderment of the miracle and not actually to worship him
Friends, we don’t come to Jesus for goosebumps and tingles. We’re not here to test and see if God is real based upon our experience.
He had just left Samaria where people placed their trust in Jesus without signs and wonders. He had supernatural insight into the woman at the well, but it was simple faith
In his own home, among his own people, they were interested in seeing signs and wonders rather than expressing faith in Christ. (See John 2:23)
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.
However, the people of Samaria believed Jesus based upon the testimony of the woman and (See John 4:39-42)
Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
Without faith!
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Don’t put your faith in the miracle, but in the God who performed miracles.
The man likely felt rebuked by Jesus, but Jesus was calling him to a deeper faith. Not just knowing about Jesus, but trusting him as savior.
The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
The man doesn’t really care about why other people believe him, he again as Jesus to come because his request is urgent.
Confident Faith
Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.
Jesus did not do what the man asked, instead, Jesus gave him a promise. “Go, your son will live.”
Instead of insisting Jesus return, the man reveals a deeper faith taking Jesus at his word and not insisting on a sign.
Confirmed Faith
As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
The son didn’t just better like the dad thought
he was completely healed the very hour Jesus told him his son would live
Contagious faith
The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.
The first sign in John’s Gospel shows Jesus’ power over time, and the second sign shows His power over space. John the Apostle also called Him the Son of God, the giver of eternal life, and the One from heaven. This section of the book, therefore, makes an important contribution to the advance of John’s argument and the fulfillment of his purpose
