Galatians 6
If you were here last week
You remember that last week was a call to live unified as a church but that each and everyone of us bare some responsibility in that
Paul left us with
Galatians 5:25–26 NASB95
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
If you and I have been freed because of what Jesus did on the cross
That is the only way that you and I can truly be free is by repenting of our sins and trusting in Jesus
If we live by the Spirit of God then let us what like it
We are saved by works but our works are an indication of our heart
Let us not challenge each other to boast about ourselves but lets us be humble towards each other
This leads us right into chapter 6 this morning
Galatians 6:1 NAS
Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
Paul is calling the churches in Galatia to lift each other up
Not to a place above God but to help and encourage and restore the person
If anyone is caught in a trespass
When I was doing my study for this
Spurgeon said that if the person is caught then they must have not been moving fast enough on the road to heaven
They must be slow moving, or maybe they get distracted by things along the way
But those of us who are not caught, are not to simply walk on by, but help them,
Help them get back up on their feet, help them to start walking, help them to not get distracted
Church what does this sound like?
DISCIPLESHIP
Church as we are walking in our own life, and walking with Christ
Sometimes he calls someone to come along side you and do life together
STORY OF MIKE TRENT
I was so blessed to be discipled by such an awesome man of God
Last year I got the change to share that
His ministry in Pittsburg, KS with college students is baring fruit in Topeka, KS, and around the world because he spent time with a crazy annoying college kid named Jeremy
Galatians 6:2–5 NASB95
2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. 5 For each one will bear his own load.
This might get confusing
First Paul says that we are to bear one another’s burden and then a few verses later Paul says that each one will bear his own load
First Paul is calling the churches in Galatia to bear each other’s load and in doing so they will fulfill the law of Christ
They were again very concerned with fulling the law of Moses and so Paul is putting it in terms they can understand
Rather than trying to fulfill the law a Moses a burden that no one could carry much less share with others and carry
It couldn’t happen
Paul calls them to once again, help each other, come alongside each other and encourage each other
Church again discipleship
But that if you start to think of yourself as something you are not, others will usually find that out before you and really you are only deceiving yourself says Spurgeon
Then just when we think we are understanding it
Paul shares that each one will bear his own load
Remember they were focused on the load of fulfilling the law of Moses becasue they thought it brought about their righteousness
So Paul says share your load and help each other and you will fulfill the law of Christ
But that only burden you cannot share with anyone is the burden of total depravtity
Meaning because of the fall in Genesis 3 you have a sin nature and as you grow into a sinful person
That is a burden you cannot share with anyone but need a savior to come and deal with your sin Himself
Jesus does just that with His death on the cross, and with his empty tomb!
Galatians 6:6 NAS
The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him.
For those of us who are taught the word, we are to share it with others
2 Timothy 4:2 NAS
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
Are you ready
If you are not then why not
If we decided that for Sunday Service instead of sitting and listening we were going to divide up into groups, some of you would stay and pray and some would go and share
THere are no other groups
I wonder how many people would be back next Sunday
Church this is what Jesus Himself commanded, called, us to do
That is what Paul calls the churches in Galatia todo
Those who have been taught the word
THose who are free from the law of Moses go and fulfill the law of Christ
We are to do what God has called us to do
Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
This is what we are to be doing
We are to go and share the Gospel with those we don’t think know the gospel
And if we find they do know the Gospel, then we maybe need to help them in walking with Christ
Galatians 6:7–10 NASB95
7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. 10 So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.
Paul issues a warning to the churches in Galatia
Don’t be fooled
Don’t think you are pulling one over on God by saying you are all for the Gospel and want people to come to know Christ but then never do anything about it
Because if you sow to the flesh then surprise surprise surprise you will reap things of the flesh
And if you sow to the Spirit then surprise surprise surprise you will reap things of the spirit
But Christians we do a good job of justifying how we sow things right
Well I need to work extra so that I can have more money
Or this is how I relax by spending so much time on the internet, or tv
Don’t give God the excuse of no time you and I will make time for what’s important to us by our actions
Church where do you spend more of your time
Paul was asking the churches in Galatia take a look at your own life what are you sowing to
This morning I think we need to do the same thing
What are you and I sowing to
Then attached to that warning Paul gives encouragement
Lets continue to walk the walk
Let us continue to do good and not grow weary
But it is tough to not grow weary ain’t it
That is why Paul has encouraged them to get back into the word of God
Church if all you listen to is the fluff stuff then your walk will crumble when you are attacked
Finally church Paul wraps up the letter
Galatians 6:11–18 NASB95
11 See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. 12 Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply so that they will not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For those who are circumcised do not even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh. 14 But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. 16 And those who will walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 17 From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.
Paul reminds them that there will be people who will try and lead them astray
Filter everything you hear and see through the Word of God
Paul is saying those who want you to follow the law of Moses don’t even follow it themselves but want you to follow the law of Moses so they can boast about it to everyone else
Church those false teachers out there probably don’t follow what they are preaching but want you to follow it so they can boast about it to everyone
Look how big our church is
We have such a big following
Paul says not him
He will only boast in Jesus Christ because it is only through Jesus Christ that you are truly free
Paul says neither circumcision or non circumcision
Paul says that following the Law of Moses or not following the Law of Moses
It is Christ and only Christ that sets you and I free
Not the law or not following the law
Because of Christ you and I are a new a creation
Paul says that no one should cause him trouble because
He knows the truth
Paul is not concerned about what makes him a Jew
Paul is concerned with Jesus Christ and Him crucified
Why because Jesus is the only one that saves
Not the law, not the church, not tithing, not membership, not scripture memorization
But Jesus Christ
As the Band COMES UP
Maybe you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship with Jesus
Maybe you are still trying to deal with the sin problem all on your own
I would invite you this morning to the front to speak with someone who will show you through scripture how you can begin a personal relationship with Jesus this morning
How you can become a new creation as Pauls says by repenting from our sin and trusting in Jesus this morning as your personal Lord and Savior
Or maybe you are here this morning and simply need to spend sometime at the altar in prayer
Or maybe you are a believer and have never been baptized we have everything ready for you this morning
The altar is open
