David’s Song of Deliverance (Remember 9/11 but also remember why you are where you are)
Psalm 18:1-35;46 (same as 2 Samuel 22)
V.1-4 We see David declare his faith and trust in God.
V.3-6 We see David’s level of distress.
V.7-19 We see the Father coming to the rescue of David.
V.20-24 We see God’s grace.
V.25-27 We see God responds accordingly with us – according to our own actions.
V.28-35 We see Praise unto God.
V.36-45 We see all that David was able to accomplish under the power of God.
V.46-50 We see Praise, Honour, and Glory given to God.
David’s deliverance was not an Eternal Salvation deliverance but rather a deliverance from his enemies. (See verses 36-50.)
Watch how closely his salvation parallels our salvation.
24 Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
· To recompense is to repay or to reward
· “According to my own righteousness” Jesus took us out from a faith/works salvation and placed us in a faith in Him alone salvation.
o Romans 3:10 There is none righteous, no not one; A reference to Psalm 14:3
o Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
§ Righteousness of a man verses that of a nation; David’s righteousness would fade as a leaf. None can keep the Law. Acts 13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Romans 3:19-23
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
25 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright; testify
26 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.
27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks.
· John 3:15-19 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
o He that would refuses God’s Love is one that has a high look of pride.
28 For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
· Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
· He will quicken my spirit. Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
“The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness” – God Himself will enlighten you. The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law. Deuteronomy 29:29.
· Jesus said, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12. The GOD of light, who sits on the throne of your life will cast the darkness from you.
· The very Sprit of GOD living in you, “the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26.
V.34 – Stronghold are town down.
· For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 2 Corinthians 10:3-4.
· For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Ephesians 6:12-13.
Verses 36-50 reveal the deliverance of David from his enemies. We are delivered from the enemy of God as well as from the soon coming Judgment of God.
“The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.” Psalm 18:46.
BUT, let me ask you some questions:
Is GOD the God of your salvation or is your salvation simply an earthly salvation?
Are you delivered from the evil to come unto an Eternal Salvation or are you just delivered from the poverty of living in a sin cursed world?
Who is your Jesus?
Is He the great prophet and teacher whose ways you follow that you might live a blessed life?
OR is HE GOD in flesh who suffered and died for you that YOU might live a life of persecution unto HIS glory?
Is your Jesus exalted in the way you are living your life right now? Now how you use to live it, but how you are living it today.
Does your life magnify the LORD OF GLORY today?
Has your Jesus lit your candle – Has HE enlightened your darkness?
Have you been Redeemed, Reconciled, Restored, Rejuvenated, Renewed – BORN AGAIN unto the glory of God and for Jesus sake?
