I. INTRODUCTION:
Saints of God, we began discussing a very important topic last week on discipleship.
Unfortunately, depending on what church you go to, this may not even be a topic of discussion. It is certainly one that isn’t discussed or acted upon enough.
Well, how do I know this? How can I make such a claim?
Well, let’s go to the word!
MATTHEW 35-38

35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

And just to reiterate this point; we can’t pray and ask God to save somebody, but we can pray and ask the Lord to send forth labourers across their path.
So, today, will be a continuation of our discipleship series, The Making of A Disciple.
The title of today’s message is The Making of A Disciple - Part II.
Last week, I shared with you some of my own personal insights and discipleship experiences.
Two very important points from last week:
Disciples are not born, they are made.
Your discipleship can truly be a light to someone, which can encourage a change in their life.
Reiterate the change that occurred with the head deacon from last week’s message.
Today, we will discuss the qualifications and disqualifications of a disciple. We will also consider the cost of discipleship and the abandonment of possessions where it is necessary.
GOLDEN TEXT:
JOHN 8:28-32, 36

28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

II. BODY:
DEFINITIONS:
1. QUALIFICATION:
a. A quality or skill that fits a person (as for an office).
b. A condition or standard that must be complied with (as for the attainment of a privilege).
2. DISQUALIFICATION:
a. The act of disqualifying
2a. DISQUALIFIED:
a. To deprive of the required qualities, properties, or conditions: make unfit
b. To deprive of a power, right or privilege.
THE QUALIFICATIONS OF A DISCIPLE:
A disciple continues in the word of God.
JOHN 8:31-32

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

b. A disciple demonstrates love between one another.
JOHN 13:34-35

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

c. A disciple bears much fruit.
JOHN 15:7-9

7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

2. DISQUALIFICATIONS OF A DISCIPLE:
a. You are not a disciple if your life in Christ has not been prioritized as your top relationship.
LUKE 14:26

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

MATTHEW 6:33-34

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

b. You are not a disciple if you endeavor not to do the work of the ministry, carry out the Great Commission to win others to Christ, or strive not to walk in your calling.
LUKE 14:28

27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

c. You are not a disciple if you are not willing to sacrifice everything you have.
LUKE 14:33-35

33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

34 Salt is good: qbut if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

III. CONCLUSION:
JESUS AND THE YOUNG RICH RULER:
LUKE 18:18-30

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.

20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.

22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

26 And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved?

27 And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

28 Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.

29 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,

30 Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.
