Where Did Jesus Go?

what did He do?
while Jesus body was in the ground
the Bible does not come right out and say
so we have to do some sloothing
pick up some clues here and there in God’s word
did He go to hell, Heaven,
Pray

From The Old Testament

Sheol/Hades place of the dead KJ pit, hell
remember Korah, they went up against Moses
Numbers 16:33 LEB
They went down alive to Sheol, they and all that belonged to them, and the land covered over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.
they went to Sheol
somewhere under the surface of the earth
Job 7:9 LEB
A cloud vanishes, and it goes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will not come up.
David writes a Messianic psalm
Psalm 16:10 LEB
for you will not abandon my soul to Sheol; you will not give your faithful one to see the grave.
Psalm 16:10 AV
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
we see Peter quote this same verse in his Pentecost sermon
speaking about Jesus
Acts 2:27 LEB
because you will not abandon my soul in Hades, nor will you permit your Holy One to experience decay.
in these 3 different verses we see Hades, Hell, and Sheol
as the place of the dead for the people before Jesus’ resurrection
in the Old Testament there is one place the souls of people go. that is Sheol

From The New Testament

Hades in Greek
Jesus tells the thief on the cross
Luke 23:43 LEB
And he said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
all versions say “paradise” none say Heaven
why is that?
so what is this paradise?
we know its not heaven
because Jesus said to Mary after the resurrection
John 20:17 LEB
Jesus said to her, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.’ ”
Jesus after the resurrection still has not been to Heaven
So again what is this Paradise
in the complete Jewish Bible its called the Garden of Eden
in Luke Jesus tells about 2 men who died and went to Hades
Luke 16:22–26 LEB
Now it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried. And in Hades he lifted up his eyes as he was in torment and saw Abraham from a distance, and Lazarus at his side. And he called out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he could dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering pain in this flame!’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you received your good things during your life, and Lazarus likewise bad things. But now he is comforted here, but you are suffering pain. And in addition to all these things, a great chasm has been established between us and you, so that those who want to cross over from here to you are not able to do so, nor can they cross over from there to us.’
Hades is split between torment and paradise
with a great gulf fixed in between
Abraham was in Paradise
the old testament saints are in Paradise
The Old Testament sinners are in Torment
another place Jesus went is...

The Prison / Tartarus

2 Peter 2:4 LEB
For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but held them captive in Tartarus with chains of darkness and handed them over to be kept for judgment,
Jude 6 LEB
And the angels who did not keep to their own domain but deserted their proper dwelling place, he has kept in eternal bonds under deep gloom for the judgment of the great day,
these are all the same Fallen Angels who are specially kept in Tartarus / prison in the deepest part of the earth
why are they here?
they deserted their proper dwelling place
these are the angels from Genesis 6
they left their angelic bodies and became humanish
2 Corinthians 5:2 LEB
For indeed, in this house we groan, because we desire to put on our dwelling from heaven,
this dwelling is our body
the angels left their body to mate with humans to corrupt the dna
so Jesus could not be born as a human thus he could not be our kinsman Redeemer
so one of the places Jesus went to is this prison to proclaim to these angels that what they did, did not work
1 Peter 3:19–20 LEB
in which also he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, who were formerly disobedient, when the patience of God waited in the days of Noah, while an ark was being constructed, in which a few—that is, eight souls—were rescued through water.
so lets go back to

Paradise

why are they not in Heaven?
2 Corinthians 5:8 LEB
so we are confident and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.
Who is Paul here talking to? New Testament Saints
these people here are the Old Testament Saints
Exodus 34:7 LEB
keeping loyal love to the thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and he does not leave utterly unpunished, punishing the guilt of fathers on sons and on sons of sons on third and fourth generations.”
Just because their sins are forgiven does not mean they can go to heaven
The work of redemption has not been accomplished
the blood that was from the animals only covered their sin
The Blood of Jesus on the cross takes away the sin of the world
John 1:29 LEB
On the next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
in Hebrews we see the redemption
Hebrews 9:15 LEB
And because of this, he is the mediator of a new covenant, in order that, because a death has taken place for the redemption of transgressions committed during the first covenant, those who are the called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Hebrews 10:3–4 LEB
But in them there is a reminder of sins year by year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
these people are waiting for Jesus to take their sins away
Job 19:25–26 LEB
But I myself know that my redeemer is alive, and at the last he will stand up upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, but from my flesh I will see God,
thus they can’t be in heaven yet, they are waiting in the Garden of Eden for their Redeemer
Jesus is here proclaiming the good news to these people
Ephesians 4:8–10 LEB
Therefore it says, “Ascending on high he led captivity captive; he gave gifts to men.” Now “he ascended,” what is it, except that he also descended to the lower regions of the earth? The one who descended himself is also the one who ascended above all the heavens, in order that he might fill all things.
and he is there to empty Paradise.
to rip the gates off and set His people free
Psalm 49:15 LEB
Surely God will ransom my life from the power of Sheol, because he will receive me. Selah
the rest of the people in Hades/torment are still there
also all of the people who have died who are unsaved today
they wont leave Hades until the great white throne judgement
Revelation 20:13–15 LEB
And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and each one was judged according to their deeds. And Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire. And if anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Jesus between death and the resurrection
went to Hades to get the old testament saints
and after the Resurrection of Jesus
Matthew 27:52–53 LEB
And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
who were these people , from Paradise
Did Jesus take them to Heaven with Him?
the bigger question
when Jesus comes for His church/ the new testament saints
the bride
will you be one of them?
if you die before that time will you come out of the grave
will you be instantly in Heaven with Jesus
or will you go to Hades and wait for your Judgement?
