Oh Lord It's Hard to be Humble Why is serving others so important anyway? Jesus tells us that ""Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all." Mark 9:35. How can you and I serve others? Be kind to each other, visit the sick, elderly, at home and at hospitals; be hospitable, offer up acts of kindness and service; volunteer. These are just a few examples of how we can serve others. Just as important be humble. He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me." Mark 9:36-37 The way of humility is the way to greatness. Reach out to those who are different that you. Gladly accept "menial" roles in teaching. Encourage and assist those who teach our children. Warmly welcome those who are below or above your social status. Help with "mundane" tasks. Help those less fortunate than you. These are just a few examples of how we can show humility towards others "The key to missions is not work, but prayer. Too often work is used as a substitute for, or a by-pass to, fervent prayer." Oswald Chambers It may not seem like much, but the way to greatness is not possible without a servant hear and servant hand, a humble heart, and a humble hand. Jesus provided the greatness of service and humility by His own example: coming to earth in the form of a servant; by humbling Himself to the point of death on the cross; finally, being highly exalted by God. If we desire to be great in the kingdoms of men, we are setting ourselves up for a fall. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted Luke 14:11 Our desire is to be great in the kingdom of God. Let us humbly serve one another, and those in the world Creator God, you call us to love and serve you with body, mind, and spirit through loving your creation and our sisters and brothers. Open our hearts in compassion and receive our prayers Going deeper: Proverbs 31:10-31 Psalm 1 James 3:13-4:3 Mark 9:30-37
