INTRODUCTION:
13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”
Review Exodus 3:11-12 “11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.””
Next question: Who are you?
If - not when. He apparently is not convinced.
The God of your fathers - not our father.
What is his name? - Who’s that? by what authority. ILLUSTRATION? SAYS WHO???
What shall I say to them - how would you answer that? God, Lord.
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
I AM WHO I AM - The name of God, I am.
I don’t need anything else to describe me.
Why don’t we use that name?
We do, It essentially is Yahweh.
YAHWEH - covential name. Elohim - meaning God. Adoni - meaning Lord.
Jehovah - latinized version. We don’t know how to actually say it.
Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you. - They were expected to know.
15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.
the LORD - caps mean Yahweh. First official mention in Exodus. They may have started to lose their connection with Him after being in Egypt.
The God of your fathers.
This is my name forever - Its still his name.
thus I am (not I AM) to be remembered throughout all generations. - It is important that we know this.
If God is I AM, then He is everything you need.
If God is I AM, then He is everything you need.
16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “I have observed you and what has been done to you in Egypt,
Go and gather the elders - the command.
The Lord, the God your fathers - YHWH,
Patriarchs were important since they received the promise promise land.
I have observed you and what has been don to you - God cares about he injustice commited. Just because he has not acted.
17 and I promise that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.” ’
I promise - When God promises something he means it.
18 And they will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, please let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’
They will listen - the elders.
You and the elders - that is how Moses got in orginally.
has met with us -
Please let us go a three days journey - huh? that is all they orginally asked for. 3 days to sacrifice to sacrifice. They likely have not been able to sacrifice and worship God for a very long time!
19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand.
Pharoah was smarter than that. You don’t let prisinors go out for three days and expect them to come back.
Imagine being told to do something and God says, by the way it isn’t going to work.
Don’t mistake the command to fight with the promise of an easy victory.
Don’t mistake the command to fight with the promise of an easy victory.
20 So I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all the wonders that I will do in it; after that he will let you go.
21 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and when you go, you shall not go empty,
A part that we often forget. God gave them favor. You will not go empty.
22 but each woman shall ask of her neighbor, and any woman who lives in her house, for silver and gold jewelry, and for clothing. You shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians.”
Women were go to their Egyptians neighbors.
Women asking for stuff haha illustration.
plunder - who plunders? Victors, not slaves!!
God turns slaves into conquerors.
God turns slaves into conquerors.
CONCLUSION:
(Jn 8) Jesus I am and Angel of the Lord. ????????????
