Have you ever had one of those days… or a few days… where it seemed like every time you try to get something done, something comes up demanding your time?
— Jesus did too!
Look at Mark 5.
— Jesus is once again on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, surrounded by a crowd, and has spent the day teaching them.
Look at Mark 4:35
Mark 4:35 NRSV
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”
— so they get in the boat to go… But look what happens as they sail.
Mark 4:37–39 NRSV
37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm.
— It is easy for us to be afraid… to be worried… to wonder how we will make it through the storms of life.... amen! Look at Jesus’s response:
Mark 4:40 NRSV
40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?”
— I want you to note the disciples question here....
Mark 4:41 NRSV
41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
— That is the question we face today!
— But… Jesus’s busy day doesn’t end there…
— His sleep has been interrupted
— His disciples have shown a lack of faith
— I am sure He is just a little bit perturbed at this point...
— Look what happens as soon as they get to the other side:
Mark 5:1–2 NRSV
1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when he had stepped out of the boat, immediately a man out of the tombs with an unclean spirit met him.
— Not only has Jesus had His nap interrupted, but as soon as He steps on Gentile land, He is confronted by demons!
(tell story)
— The demon begs Jesus not to torment him, why? Because He had commanded him to come out of the man! (even demons recognize and have faith in the Son of God)
Mark 5:7–10 NRSV
7 and he shouted at the top of his voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he had said to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 He begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
— so, he asked Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and 2,000 pigs ran into the sea and drowned....
— the people were afraid and asked Jesus to leave.... so the disciples and Jesus load back up in the boats… look at what Jesus tells the man when he begs Him to let him go with them....
Mark 5:19 NRSV
19 But Jesus refused, and said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you.”
— Now check this out… The man was so excited that instead of going home, he went to the Decapolis and began telling people there!
— Now we’re not done yet!
Mark 5:21–23 NRSV
21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. 22 Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet 23 and begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.”
— So, Jesus went with him… and a great crowd pressed in on Him.... Everyone wanted to see Jesus!
— (the bleeding woman)
— Now, picture this… there is a huge crowd… everyone wants to get close to Jesus… Jesus and Jairus are attempting to get to Jairus’s house so Jesus can heal his daughter… And right in the middle of the crowd… with everyone pressin in (pushing a shoving trying to get to Jesus).... Jesus stops!
Mark 5:30 NRSV
30 Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?”
— “Who touched me?” Can you imagine the disciples shock?!
— (the woman comes and kneels before him)
— look at Jesus’s words to her:
Mark 5:34 NRSV
34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
— He didn’t condemn her.... He didn’t talk down to her… He called her “daughter”....
— Now, we still haven’t made it to Jairus’s daughter!
Mark 5:35 NRSV
35 While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?”
— but look what Jesus tells him:
Mark 5:36 NRSV
36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
— then He takes Jairus, Peter, James and John and goes to Jairus’s house.
— (tell the story) “finds the weeping and wailing”
Mark 5:39 NRSV
39 When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.”
— finish the story.
Talk about a busy day!!!!
Lesson we can learn from Jesus’s busy day:
— There is nothing we can face in this life that Jesus cannot deliver us from!
— He can calm the chaos and destruction that this world throws at us!
— He can deliver us from the oppression of the enemy!
— He can heal our physical needs… there is no disease beyond His control!
— He can deliver us from death!
All have sinned....
The wages of sin is death....
It takes repentance, confession, and faith....
— We must humble ourselves and seek His work in our lives!
