Overview of Zechariah
Zechariah 1:1–3 (ESV)
1In
the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the
word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah, the
son of Berechiah, son of Iddo, saying,
2“The LORD was very angry with your fathers.
3Therefore say to them, Thus declares the LORD of
hosts: Return to me, says the LORD of hosts, and I
will return to you, says the LORD of hosts.
Theme of Zechariah
Return to Yahweh of Armies who returns (1:3;
14:5) with fury for His foes (1:15; 14:3, 12-13)
and comfort for His children (1:13-14, 16-17;
10:6) to universally establish (14:9) His
immediate (2:5, 10,11), holy presence (8:3, 23;
14:20-21).
Zechariah 9:10–13 (ESV)
will cut o the chariot from Ephraim and the war
horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be
11
cut o . . . As for you also . . . I will set your prisoners
12
free from the waterless pit. Return to your
13
stronghold, O prisoners of hope. . . For I have bent
Judah as my bow; I have made Ephraim its arrow. I
will stir up your sons, O Zion . . . and wield you like a
warrior’s sword.

Zechariah 9:14–15a (ESV)
the LORD will appear over them, and his arrow
will go forth like lightning; the Lord GOD will sound the
trumpet and will march forth in the whirlwinds of the
15
south. The LORD of hosts will protect them, and
they shall devour, and tread down the sling stones,
14Then
Zechariah 14:3 (ESV)
fi
fi
Then the LORD will go out and ght against those
nations as when he ghts on a day of battle.
Zechariah 14:12–13a (ESV)
this shall be the plague with which the LORD
will strike all the peoples that wage war against
Jerusalem: their esh will rot while they are still
standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their
sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.
13And on that day a great panic from the LORD shall
fall on them.
fl
12And
Zechariah 1:2 (ESV)
The LORD was very angry with your fathers.
Zechariah 1:12 (ESV)
Then the angel of the LORD said, ‘O LORD of hosts,
how long will you have no mercy on Jerusalem and
the cities of Judah, against which angry these
seventy years?’
Zechariah 1:15 (ESV)
And I am exceedingly angry with the nations that are
at ease; for while I was angry but a little, they
furthered the disaster.
Zechariah 7:12c (ESV)
Therefore great anger came from the LORD of
hosts.
fl
Zechariah 10:3a (ESV)
My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will
punish the leaders; for the LORD of hosts cares for his
ock.
Zechariah 1:13 (ESV)
And the LORD answered gracious and comforting
words to the angel who talked with me.
Zechariah 1:17 (ESV)
fl
Cry out again, Thus says the LORD of hosts: My cities
shall again over ow with prosperity, and the LORD
will again comfort Zion and again choose
Jerusalem.’ ”
Zechariah 8:11–15 (ESV)
now I will not deal with the remnant of this
people as in the former days, declares the Lord of
12
hosts. For there shall be a sowing of peace. The vine
shall give its fruit, and the ground shall give its
produce, and the heavens shall give their dew. And I
will cause the remnant of this people to possess all
these things.
11But
Zechariah 8:11–15 (ESV)
as you have been a byword of cursing among the
nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so will I
save you, and you shall be a blessing. Fear not, but let
14
your hands be strong.” For thus says the LORD of hosts:
“As I purposed to bring disaster to you when your fathers
provoked me to wrath, and I did not relent, says the LORD
15
of hosts, so again have I purposed in these days to bring
good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah; fear not.
13And
Zechariah 10:3b (ESV)
fl
For the LORD of hosts cares for his ock, the house
of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in
battle.
Zechariah 10:6 (ESV)
I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save
the house of Joseph. I will bring them back because
I have compassion on them, and they shall be as
though I had not rejected them, for I am the LORD
their God and I will answer them.
Zechariah 12:8a (ESV)
On that day the LORD will protect the inhabitants of
Jerusalem,
Zechariah 14:11 (ESV)
And it [Jerusalem] shall be inhabited, for there shall
never again be a decree of utter destruction.
Jerusalem shall dwell in security.
Zechariah 2:6-7 (ESV)
Up! Up! Flee from the land of the north, declares the
LORD. For I have spread you abroad as the four winds
7
of the heavens, declares the LORD. Up! Escape to
Zion, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon.
Zechariah 7:4-6 (ESV)
the word of the LORD of hosts came to me:
5“Say to all the people of the land and the priests,
‘When you fasted and mourned in the fth month and
in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me
6
that you fasted? And when you eat and when you
drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for
yourselves?
fi
4Then
Zechariah 1:12 (ESV)
Then the angel of the LORD said, ‘O LORD of hosts,
how long will you have no mercy on Jerusalem and
the cities of Judah, against which angry these
seventy years?’
Zechariah 7:9-11 (ESV)
9“Thus
says the LORD of hosts, Render true
judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another,
10do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the
sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil
11
against another in your heart.” But they refused to
pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and
stopped their ears that they might not hear.
Zechariah 8:16–17 (ESV)
16These
are the things that you shall do: Speak the
truth to one another; render in your gates judgments
17
that are true and make for peace; do not devise evil
in your hearts against one another, and love no false
oath, for all these things I hate, declares the
LORD.”
1 John 4:20 (ESV)
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he
is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom
he has seen cannot love God whom he has not
seen.
Zechariah 3:3-4 (ESV)

Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed
4
with lthy garments. And the angel said to those who
were standing before him, “Remove the lthy
garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I
have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will
clothe you with pure vestments.”
Zechariah 3:9c (ESV)
I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.
Zechariah 13:1 (ESV)
On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the
house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to
cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.
Zechariah 4:6 (ESV)
1I
Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD
to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by
my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.
