I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before or not but...
Romans 1-8 is considered the Doctrinal Section of Romans.
The Power of the Gospel Romans 1:1-17
The Doctrine of Sin Romans 1:18-3:20
The Doctrine of Justification Romans 3:21-4:25
The Doctrine of Sanctification Romans 5:1-8:39
Last time we met we discussed the key verse of Romans.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
We talked about How the Gospel contains the power to transform lives.
Romans Romans 1:16–17
Important Revelation: Verses 17–18 reveal two things, one positive, one negative. The positive—the righteousness of God—should lead God’s creation to a humble and obedient response.
This positive revelation sets the stage for a more daunting revelation in the next verse. Although the revelation of God’s righteousness ought to be sufficient to get people’s attention, Paul provides more practical motivation: the revelation of God’s wrath (1:18).
Today we move on to something a little more negative - but necessary.- That of God’s Wrath.
Romans 1:18 a we have the REVELATION of God’s Wrath
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
The FACT of God’s wrath
God’s wrath is shown here to be an unavoidable fact. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven”
God’s wrath “is the just, proper, and natural expression of God’s holiness to man’s sin. God doesn’t ‘get’ angry, He is always angry with sin.”
The FOCUS of God’s wrath - “against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men”
Ungodliness - “a lack of respect for God. Withholding His rightful place of Lordship in any area of our life.”
Unrighteousness - “A lack of conformity to God’s Law. (He demands that we be holy in every part of our life 1 Peter 1:15-16)
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
The Reasons for God’s wrath Romans 1:18b-23
Did you know that fallen mankind has the ability, through God’s grace, to see and know God through nature? Romans 1:19-20 (see above)
There is a SUPPRESSION of the Revelation of God - that is what is meant by “hold the truth in unrighteousness.”
The certainty (Romans 1:19) “God hath showed it unto them”
The clairty (Romans 1:20) “Are clearly seen”
The content (Romans 1:20b) “His eternal power and godhead”
The condemnation (Romans 1:20c) “They are without excuse”
Everyone receives an opportunity according to Titus 2:11
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
If we suppress that “grace” or truth or revelation of God we bring the wrath of God upon our head.
Suppression of the truth leads to idolatry and filling the void with something else
There is a SUBVERSION of God as God.
Notice the exchanges
Romans 1:23 - Exchanged the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image (Idolatry)
God gave them up to uncleanness (Romans 1:24)
Romans 1:25 - Exchanged the truth of God into a lie
God gave them up to vile affections
