(Acts 27)
Paul left on a voyage
Why? Went before Festus appealed to Caesar
Who seemed to be in charge of Paul’s voyage—his life at that point? Julius and the ship’s captain
Paul: Paul: innocent of any crime. As a prisoner, his life was in the hands of ungodly political leaders, Roman soldiers, and a ship’s captain and crew.—YET--
His life remained in the hands of God.
“It was determined by the counsel of God, before it was determined by the counsel of Festus, that Paul should go to Rome; for, whatever man intended, God had work for him to do there.” —Matthew Henry
God never wastes a voyage.
Do you remember a time when you decided to chart your own course in life? What was the result of that decision? How did it affect you?
Looking back, can you see how God redeemed that season?
How do you think our lives often mirror Paul’s as he started on his journey?
decisions—being made by anyone but ourselves or God
Voyage is at the mercy of others with no consideration for our safety and security
Do you believe we have an enemy? Why or why not?
Who is our enemy? Satan
How do you know?
11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.
12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
We know:
our journey may be impacted by the poor decisions of others or ourselves, but God is above all, over all, and bigger than all people, events, and circumstances. He will never leave us.
Enemy wants us to believe:
God is not at the helm
we must chart our own course
he has the power to determine our destiny / we are at his mercy
How did Jesus respond to the enemy’s message?
Rely on the Word
23 The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
11 But the Lord’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken.
11 You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.
22 Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
Jesus allowed the Father to plan each step of His journey here on earth.
Jesus infused eternal purposes into every hour of every day.
Have you ever noticed when reading about the life of Christ, how He viewed others?
He valued others—regardless of how they interrupted His daily responsibilities. Yet He remained faithful to God’s vision.
Anyone ever experience interruptions to your daily responsibilities?
How did Jesus remain faithful to God’s vision?
16 But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.
He met with the Father
16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.
He made it His priority to worship in the synagogue and develop relationships with others who were seeking to follow God
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”
He reached out to the lost
He created space to mentor/disciple His followers
He provided an example of purposeful, intentional life lived for the glory of God.
He was steadfast in His daily walk with God, which enabled Him to be steadfast in His life’s journey.
Our Mighty Captain
Our Mighty Captain
God knows every storm we will encounter and promises protection.
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Safest place to be is right in the middle of God’s will
