Hi church you’re stuck with me today.
I am the drummer
also HS pastor
and assistant pastor to Pastor Mike
I get the honor to teach for him today
he says hi, and that he loves you....
and he said I get to teach whatever I want.
so today we will be in my favorite book in the Bible....
Leviticus!
Turn to Leviticus 23
Lets pray
tonight and tomorrow is a very special day in the Bible.
Do you know what day it is?
YOM KIPPUR!!!

Yom Kippur

it means Day of Atonement
Yom- Day
Kippur - Atonement

What does the Day of Atonement have to do with me?

good question.....
3 things:

1. It is Heavenly:

It is one of the 7 Holy day / holidays
that God said is HIS:
Leviticus 23:2 (NKJV)
2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts.
The Jews consider today to be the most holy day of the year.
But this Day is also prophetic of a future Day!
this feast is about the removal of sin
and it is prophetical of when sin is permanently removed.
Want know how I know that?
According to Lev 23 there is 6 Holy Days aside from Sabbath
3 in the Spring
3 in the fall
the 3 in the Spring clearly prophetic of Jesus.
The 3 SPRING HOLY DAYS:
Passover
First fruits of Barley
First Fruits of Wheat (Pentecost)
Passover- (is about God saving Israel from Egypt.... Egypt is a picture of sin)
So passover is a picture of God delivering His people out of sin
They also remember that by the blood of a lamb god’s people were saved from God judgment.
Passover is also when Christ’s also called by the John the Baptist in John 1:29 (the Lamb of God) died for the sins of His people
First fruits of Barley (is about how God provides)
well if Jesus fulfilled this Feast ....
what did Jesus provide for us? Salvation?
When did Jesus provide salvation for us?
When He resurrected?!
Guess what First fruits of barley is celebrated 3 days after Passover
(when Jesus died and when Jesus was resurrected
coincidence? nope!
First fruits of Wheat is the last spring holy day
it took place 50 days after firstfruits of barley
which is when in Acts ch.2 that the Holy Spirit started the church to spread the gospel to the World
coinsicidence? nope
So if the Spring feast are clearly prophetic of Jesus
what are the Fall Feast prophetic of?
The last days!
the first is the feast of trumpets, it is a time when the people focused on repentance.
it is a time when the trumpet is blown
it is prophetic of the rapture
1 Thessalonians 4:15–18 NKJV
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.
The next Holy Day is the Day of Atonement
it is about the removal of sins
it is prophetic when sins are permanent removed. that takes place in Rev 20
also teaching us that the Bible has no sin in the first 2 chapters and the last 2 chapters.
Oh and what takes place between the rapture and the removal of sins?
The 7 year tribulation
Oh well the Jews have something called Yomim Noraʾim, (The Days of Awe)
that lasts 7 days between the feast of trumpets to the day of atonement.
Okay So if the Day of Atonement is about the removal of sins
What happens after sin is removed?
Eternity starts? We live with God
Well the last holy day is the feast of Tabernacle
and it about remembering God dwelling with His people in the wilderness
so it is prophetic of when God will dwell and live with us for eternity.
oh Yeah and what is between the Spring and Fall?
Summer?
what is between the time of Jesus and the last days?
The church
So the summer months are prophetic and a picture of the church.
So as you can see the Day of Atonement is important to us because is prophetic of the last days.
this is a day God wants us to know about
In Leviticus 23:23 it says that his Hoy Day shall be celebrated forever
just like the feast of Tabernacles (Zech 14:16)
So might as well prepare ourselves for Heaven now?
That is one big reason why to study the Bible:
give yourself one less surprise when you get to Heaven.

2. It gives context to the Bible:

It helps us to understand the culture within the Bible
It helps us understand key words like:
Atonement means - to cover over, or pacify.
The pacifier doesn't solve the problem to why the baby is crying, just stops the crying
“Atonement doesn't permanently remove sin,
but it pacifies the need for judgment.”
Did you know that the New Testament never says atonement?
because what Jesus did didnt pacify the need for judgment.
He provided forgiveness that removed the need for Judgment.
So the Old Testament is atonement. the New testament is forgiveness.
So everyone in the OT looked forward to forgiveness when they no longer needed to offer sacrifices
In Jeremiah 31:31 you can see the hope of Israel for forgiveness
Jeremiah 31:31–34 NKJV
“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
which leads me to the last and possibly most important reason to study the Day of Atonement

3.It is all about Jesus

Understanding this day helps us know more about Jesus
Romans 6:23 NKJV
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Sin costs death.
Why? because God who is perfect also is what life is.
John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
& all over the Bible we see God breathes life into creation.(Job 33:4; Is 42:5; John 20:21-22)
Sin is doing the exact opposite of who God is (who is life)
and so sin causes death.
Which is why in the OT they sacrificed animals
so that something else died for the sin you committed.
Now in Lev 17:11
Leviticus 17:11 NKJV
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’
Life is in the blood.
So when you sacrificed an animal and it shed its blood for your sins it gave you atonement.
which is also why the Jews could not drink the blood
yes, other cultures in the time of the Bible drank blood.
but Jews were not allowed to drink blood because it carried our sins
So if they drank the blood it was like they were
metaphorically taking their sins back in them.
Thats why the Jews thought Jesus was crazy and left Him
when Jesus said drink my blood in John 6:56
The difference between the blood of Jesus and animals
is that Jesus resurrected....
and that changes everything!
show slide
Jesus’ blood:
•  is a token of the New Covenant (Matthew 26:28, Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:25).
•  gives life (John 6:54).
•  brings redemption (Ephesians 1:7).
•  makes propitiation (Romans 3:25).
•  justifies (Romans 5:9).
•  provides access through forgiveness (Colossians 1:14, Ephesians 1:7, 1 John 1:9, Ephesians 2:13).
•  provides reconciliation (Colossians 1:19-20).
•  provides cleansing (1 John 1:7).
•  makes us overcomers (Revelation 12:11).
Which is why John the Baptist said what he said when he saw Jesus in John 1:29
John 1:29 NKJV
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
So this Holy Day is about how Jesus fulfilled the Day of Atonement.
So I want to share with you about the day of Atonement because:
It is Heavenly
It gives context to the Bible
It is about Jesus
All you need to know about Yom Kippur can be seen in 3 verses, and there is 4 Features to it

The 4 Features of Yom Kippur

all seen in
Leviticus 23:27–28 (NKJV)
“Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God.
so the 4 features is
A Holy Convocation
Afflict your soul
offer an offering
Do not work on that same day
Why do those 4 things?
For atonement.

1. Holy Convocation

Holy (qo-das) - set apart and sacred.
Convocation (miq-ra) - gathering.
So a set apart and sacred gathering.
In Jesus Day for the Day of Atonement:
The Jews would attend a service.
A part of the service included the reading of Isaiah 61
Some of the classical rabbis believed this passage of Isaiah 61 would be
the very words the Messiah would speak to Israel when He came
The fact that Isaiah 61 speaks of the Messiah
led other rabbis to believe that the Messiah would appear on a very special Day of Atonement in the Year of Jubilee (see Leviticus 25:10).
Here is a quote from a ancient rabbi who believed this
“The world will endure not less than 85 Jubilees, and in the last jubilee the Messiah, Son of David, will come” (Talmud Sanhedrin 97b).
So the Jews heavily thought that the Messiah would appear on the Day of Atonement on a Jubilee year and Speak Isaiah 61.
Here is an example of how the Day of Atonement brings context to scripture....
because now knowing that
lets read… and I want you to notice how the Jews know exactly what Jesus did.
Luke 4:16–22 (NKJV)
So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
the people understand, who Jesus just claimed to be
that is why they ask in in verse 22 “isnt this the son of Joseph”
Remember that they expected the Messiah to read this,
and remember they knew the Messiah was going to come from David.
But they didn't know that Joseph came from the line of David.
and they rejected Jesus.
What is interesting is that after the temple was destroyed in 70 AD
they stopped reading Isaiah 61
But what they read today as a replacement is very interesting.
They read Isaiah 53 - a chapter that describes the Messiah.
I think God is trying to tell them something.
It is crazy they missed Jesus in their service in Isaiah 61 then,
and they are missing Jesus now in Isaiah 53.
How did they miss Jesus?
They loved their religion and their appearances.
This was a problem during the very first Day of Atonement with Nadab & Abihu
they offered profane fire and entered the Holy of Holies at the wrong time.
Their worship wasn't about God it was about themselves.
so God killed them
But I have a question for you are you missing Jesus in your holy gatherings now?
Like the Jews are you guilty of being
so focused on religion and appearances that you miss Jesus.
God calls it hypocrisy
I wonder how many people don’t receive prayer because they are afraid of what other may think.
Or how many people are trying to be leaders at church but they dont even lead their families to Jesus.
How many hidden sins are being covered by spiritual talk, and service.
A hypocrite doesn't want people to know they are a hypocrite.
because its all about the appearance.
God hates hypocrisy
Isaiah 1:13 NKJV
Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies— I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.
When there is sin God hates when we gather acting like were part of something sacred and holy.
Amos 5:21 NKJV
“I hate, I despise your feast days, And I do not savor your sacred assemblies.
so this was a time to not be fake.
to gather with a genuine love for God, and His people.
So the second element in this Holy Day is:

2. Afflict your Souls

this part was very important and is repeated two more times for the Day of Atonement in Lev 16:29 & v.31)
what does afflict your soul mean?
To bow your soul, to humble yourself or to surrender
Most scholars believe that this is where fasting comes from.
So in Jesus day
The Jews would fast for this feast
- to remember that what is more important is not physical but spiritual.
which teaches us that we are to forsake the flesh and focus on the Spirit.
This is a choice we have:
Feed the flesh or feed the Spirit.
Whichever we feed will get strong and overpower the other.
Terri taught me a quote that says
“Inside each of us, there is a dove and a crow. Whichever one you feed is the one that will grow.”
So today is a day to ask ourselves am I feeding the Spirit or the Flesh?
Apart from Jesus we can do nothing (John 15),
God will accomplish His work in us.
Thats why it is important to surrender:
The New Testament Word for surrender, bow down, humble yourself.
is Proskyneo
Say Proskyneo
this is the main word used for worship in the NT
it means to bow down like how a dog bows down to eat from his masters feet.
so today was about coming down to reality that your not as great as you think you are
Me and Pastor Albert always said that to each other:
“ypur not as good as you think you are’
This was a day to remember we are sinful dust before a mighty God.
Which is theologically in line with scripture because
the Day of Atonement was after Feast of Trumpets
as we saw earlier the Feast of Trumpets and Day of Atonement have a connection.
The feast of trumpets spoke of repentance and the Day of atonement spoke of the forgiveness of sins.
which is exactly the common teaching of the Old and New Testament.
Repentance must come before sacrifice.
So during the Feast of Trumpets they were focused on Repentance and once it hit the day of atonement they afflicted their soul.
They humbled themes', bowed, down, ,
It was a God i failed you and I need your help.

3. Offer an Offering

All of Leviticus 16 is about this while all the offerings are listed in Numbers 28:7-11
it involved 6 things
1. The first thing the Priest would do is offer a sin offering and burnt offering of consecration (v.3).
-this gave atonement to the Priesthood so they can help in bringing atonement to all God people.
2. Wash (v.4)
3. The priest then put on linen garments (v.4)
which we believe are different garments than the ones outlined in Exodus 28. The garments in Exodus 28 were very ornate and fancy, but the ones described here are very humble.
This is significant because it is a picture of our humble High Priest, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:14; Philippians 2:8).
He humbled Himself and put on humble flesh when He came to this earth to atone for our sins.
Even though Jesus is our Great High Priest, He did not come to be served, but to serve.
4. The high priest had to atone for his own sins (v.5-6)
he had to atone for his own sins before he could be used by God to atone for the sins of the people
5. The High Priest would do the 2 practices to atone for all the people (7-22)
1. The first practice involves 2 goats (v.8-10).
both goats represent Jesus Christ
One was to be a dead goat (called Chatat)
and the other was to be a scapegoat (called the Azazel,
The dead goat was sacrificed for the sins of the people,
just as Jesus was our sacrifice for our sins as He died (1 Corinthians 15:3; Galatians 1:4).
The next goat is the scapegoat.
The word scapegoat literally means to take away/remove,
The priest would lay his hands on the head of the goat as he confessed the sins of the people.
remember laying of hands symbolized a transferor sins.
But instead of killing this animal,
the goat would be set free in the wilderness
We too must confess
We also need to confess our sins to others for accountability (James 5:16)
and to God for forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
Once we confess our sins, it is transferred to the scapegoat, for us is Jesus
who bore our sins on His body (1 Peter 2:24; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
Because of Jesus, we are no longer under the power of sin (Romans 6:14).
which is exactly what Jesus did with our sins instead of just covering it (John 1:29; Psalm 103:12).
It is believed that in times of Jesus and before Him:
there would be a watchman who watch the scapegoat until it was out of his sight..
then he would announce it is gone.
which reminds me of Psalm 103:12 “12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
Psalm 103:12 NKJV
As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
2. The second thing the Priest would do to atone for the people had to with the incense & burning coals in the Holy of Holies
The high priest brought incense & burning coals into the Holy of Holies (v.11-13).
this is the part people love about the Day of Atonement.
That is seen in Exodus 28
that they would strap bells to the feet of the Priest entering the holy of holies and tie a rope along his leg
so that if he dropped dead in Gods presence they would stop hearing the bells and could pull him out
This is significant because in verse 2, we read that God will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat,
and then in verse 13, it says that the priest will burn the incense on the coals
which will form a cloud above the mercy seat
Fun fact: In Exodus 30, the incense is very significant because it was lit every morning and every evening as a sign to the people to begin to pray.
The symbol of incense was that, as they prayed, their prayers would go up along with the incense.
And that their prayers are in the presence of God
This incense in Leviticus 16 is offered by the high priest on
The Day of Atonement to God to make atonement for the people… in the Holy of Holies.
So the picture here with the burning coals and incense
was the HIgh Priest representing the Prayers of Israel for Atonement of their sins.
Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest and He lives to make intercession for us in the presence of God also. (Hebrews 4:14; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 1:3).
6. The Priest before returning would wash themselves (v.23-28)
Once they lead the scape goat out of the camp.
The priests could only come back into the camp after they were washed with water.
We also need to be washed with water.
Jesus washes the church with the washing of water by the Word (Ephesians 5:25).
We are washed by the Word!
We are born again by the Word (1 Peter 1:23).
The Word is Jesus and we are washed by Him (John 1:14).
then after this took place

4. Do Not Work

so tomorrow dont go to work
because you need to thank God the forgivess of Jesus
In Jesus day:
The Day of Atonement ends with an important Neilah service (the closing of the gates).
The final blast of the shofar is sounded.
It is thought that the fate of each individual is sealed at that time for the upcoming year.
Then they would break their fast in the break-the-fast meal.
To do that they would First have a taste of wine.
Interesting that Jesus who is the fulfillment of this feast said “He will not drink this wine until He is with them in Heaven” (Matthew 26:29)…
So Jesus in a sense Jesus doesn't break the fast…or end the feast
Teaching us that with Jesus the Day of Atonement doesn't end!!! PTL!!! Salvation is eternal with Jesus.
END!!
So today lets celebrate this Day of Atonement
Thank Jesus for being our scape goat
to confess the sins you are guilty of.
and because this feast day is also prophetic
nd lets look forward to when sin is no longer just forgiven but is removed.
