Psalm 16 verses 1-11 pg. 788
Keep me safe, O God.
for in you I take refuge.
I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”
As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight.
The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods.
I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips.
Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,
because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
You have made known to me the path of life;
You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
*LET US PRAY
Prayer of Confession and Repentance
Father in heaven we thank you for you Son Jesus
Who, by his example and precept, instructed us to be meek and humble,
give us grace throughout our whole lives, in every thought, and word, and work, to imitate your meekness and humility.
Mortify in us any pride; grant us to feel that we are nothing and have nothing, and that we deserve nothing but shame and contempt,
Grant, O Lord, that we may look for nothing, claim nothing;
but enable us to look wholly unto you, and acting wholly for you. Let us never speak any word that may tend to our own praise,
Let our ears and our hearts be ever shut to the praise that comes from men.
Give me a dread of applause, in whatsoever form, and from whatsoever tongue, it comes.
Deliver our souls from the snare of hell; And who ever perishes there, let their blood be upon their own head,
O giver of every good and perfect gift, if at any time you are pleased to work by our hands,
teach us to discern what is our own and from what is another’s,
and to render unto you the things that are yours. As all the good that is done on earth is from you,
let us give you all the glory honour and praise, In Christ’s name Amen.
Assurance of PardonRomans 5:1-11Romans 5:1–11 (ESV): 5 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
6  For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Joel 2:1-32
Blow a trumpet in Zion;
sound an alarm on my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for the day of the Lord is coming; it is near,
a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and thick darkness!
Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains
a great and powerful people;
their like has never been before,
nor will be again after them
through the years of all generations.
Fire devours before them,
and behind them a flame burns.
The land is like the garden of Eden before them,
but behind them a desolate wilderness,
and nothing escapes them.
Their appearance is like the appearance of horses,
and like war horses they run.
As with the rumbling of chariots,
they leap on the tops of the mountains,
like the crackling of a flame of fire
devouring the stubble,
like a powerful army
drawn up for battle.
Before them peoples are in anguish;
all faces grow pale.
Like warriors they charge;
like soldiers they scale the wall.
They march each on his way;
they do not swerve from their paths.
They do not jostle one another;
each marches in his path;
they burst through the weapons
and are not halted.
They leap upon the city,
they run upon the walls,
they climb up into the houses,
they enter through the windows like a thief.
10  The earth quakes before them;
the heavens tremble.
The sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withdraw their shining.
11  The Lord utters his voice
before his army,
for his camp is exceedingly great;
he who executes his word is powerful.
For the day of the Lord is great and very awesome;
who can endure it?
Return to the Lord
12  “Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13  and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
and he relents over disaster.
14  Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
for the Lord your God?
15  Blow the trumpet in Zion;
consecrate a fast;
call a solemn assembly;
16  gather the people.
Consecrate the congregation;
assemble the elders;
gather the children,
even nursing infants.
Let the bridegroom leave his room,
and the bride her chamber.
17  Between the vestibule and the altar
let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep
and say, “Spare your people, O Lord,
and make not your heritage a reproach,
a byword among the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’ ”
The Lord Had Pity
18  Then the Lord became jealous for his land
and had pity on his people.
19  The Lord answered and said to his people,
“Behold, I am sending to you
grain, wine, and oil,
and you will be satisfied;
and I will no more make you
a reproach among the nations.
20  “I will remove the northerner far from you,
and drive him into a parched and desolate land,
his vanguard into the eastern sea,
and his rear guard into the western sea;
the stench and foul smell of him will rise,
for he has done great things.
21  “Fear not, O land;
be glad and rejoice,
for the Lord has done great things!
22  Fear not, you beasts of the field,
for the pastures of the wilderness are green;
the tree bears its fruit;
the fig tree and vine give their full yield.
23  “Be glad, O children of Zion,
and rejoice in the Lord your God,
for he has given the early rain for your vindication;
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the latter rain, as before.
24  “The threshing floors shall be full of grain;
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25  I will restore to you the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army, which I sent among you.
26  “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
and praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.
27  You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I am the Lord your God and there is none else.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.
The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit
28  “And it shall come to pass afterward,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
29  Even on the male and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
May the Lord add his blessing to this reading of His Word
Sermon Introduction
We come to our text today in anticipation.
And do you remember what the anticipation is concerning?
It’s the fulfillment of the promise from Our Lord to the church back in Acts 1:4 just before Christs Ascension.
Our Lord said
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
They are about to be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
The Lords word is true
The Lords Word is Sure
The Lords Word comes to fulfilment
I will be preaching on verses 1-24 But we read the full text so you have a complete picture of the narative.
So let us read of the fulfilment of this promise in Acts 2:1-41

Acts 2:1–41 ESV
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, “ ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’ Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
The Grass withers the flower fades but the Word of our God shall stand Forever.

HP “The Holy Spirit and Prophecy Fulfilled”

Verses 1-4 The promise of the Holy Spirit Comes True.

Acts 2:1-4
2 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
When we come to this chapter many things are happening that don’t happen every day.
Things we should notice that there is a mighty rushing wind.
Many things are associated with the wind concerning The Holy Spirit
We have the Spirit of God in Genesis breathing life into the man which involves the wind

7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8

The Spirit also takes on other forms like a dove in the Baptism of Jesus
John 1:32 ESV
And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.
Ezekiel 1:4 is a vision with the spirit in it.

4 As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming metal.

So what is my point of bringing up these passages with wind and fire and a dove descending from heaven at the Baptism of Jesus.
That the Spirit of God takes on these different forms such as a dove or wind or fire and in our text today Wind and tounges that are flaming or on fire that rested on each one of them.
This is miraculous
This is something that doesn't happen every day.
This is special
This is the promise of Christ coming true
And his gift to them is the Spirit who is allowing them to speak in other languages.
Let us we clear hear that these are known languages not unknown languages.
Why do I mention this because there are many foolish so called followers of Christ in the Pentecostal church who say and talk in gibberish.
They call it there own private prayer language.
And know one understands it but them.
This is not what is going on.
And those that claim this gift is still going on in the church today are lying to you.
And they are distorting the text before us today.
Let’s read verses 5-13 to see what the infallible Word of God has to say regarding what some today distort reguarding the miracle of speaking in tongues.

Verses 5-13 The Spirit Allows them to speak in other known tongues

5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

So we see this miracle is not speaking in some prayer language.
Verse 6 says
6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
They were hearing others from other parts of the country speak in there own language.
It would be like someone from China speaking Maderine and saying Jooza Beza or Ezza and I hear them saying Chair, table and cup in English.
But the people that this miracle is happening to are not talking about cups or tables or chairs.
They are according to verse 11 were hearing about the mighty works of God
Imagine it a crowd of devout men all from different areas
They are living in Jerusalem.
They are hearing men they know who maybe live in their community but never speak to becasue they speak different languages.
I don’t speak spanish and my neighbor or Juan only speaks broken English and our conversations are limited.
But if I was here in Jerusalem at this point in history I would be hearing Juan speak perfect English and he would hear me speaking perfect spanish.
But all these men are from different nations.
Galileans, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia Judea Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and Libya
Visors from Rome
Jews and New Believers in Christ that is what a Proselyte is.
Cretans and Arabians
And they are all bewildered or confused or just can’t believe it.
And they are hearing the gospel.
They are hearing the mighty works of God.
The fact that Christ died on a cross to save sinners
is the mighty work of God.
And they are bewildered
Why is this?
Are they afraid of the truth that is being proclaimed to them about what Christ has done?
Or maybe they are feeling guilt at what some of them did to Christ.
Those Jews and those from Rome Who crucified him.
These are the devout men that are living in Jerusalem.
And when is this happening?
many speculate that this event Pentecost is happening at the anniversary of the giving of the law of God at Mount Sinai according to a later Rabbinic tradition.
Which was another miraculous Work of God in which his Law was given to the people of God .
Exodus 20:18-21

18 Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off 19 and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.” 20 Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.” 21 The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

But our text does not speak to this this morning.
But we can see in both these instances God condesending to men.
The people being perplexed or bewildered Or afraid.
And God communicating his truth to the people of God and all who are at the event.
And what is the response of the people. in Acts 2
According to Verse 12
Everyone was amazed
Everyone was Perplexed
Everyone is talking to one another
What does this mean?
And you would have the same response then that you have today in the church.
Some men marvel and believe in the mighty acts of God.
And some scoff at the acts of God and blow them off.
Lets read verse 13

13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Unbelievers do what unbelievers always do
They mock the things of God.
And even if someone would perform a miracle from heaven they won’t believe it because they cannot believe.
God has hidden the truth from some and revealed his grace to others.
But what does Peter do.
What all good Preachers do. He rebukes those who mock the things of God and
points them to the Scripture for the fulfillment of Prophecy and the hope of the Gospel.
Verses 14-21 speak about the prophecy of Joel being fulfilled.

Verses 14-21 Prophecy fulfilled from Joel 2

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

Peter starts with a logical argument
Its only 9:00 a.m.
who drinks at 9:00 a.m.
I know some that are drunks do
But even those who do drink its usually in the evening after work
and if they were drunk they would probably be sleeping it off.
And if you still think they are drunck its not so this is the
Work of God
this is what Christ promised us
And this is the fulfillment of the Prophesy of Joel chapter 2
which reads in verses 17-21

‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,

that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams;

18  even on my male servants and female servants

in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.

19  And I will show wonders in the heavens above

and signs on the earth below,

blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;

20  the sun shall be turned to darkness

and the moon to blood,

before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.

21  And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Now despite your view on eschatology - the study of last things.
Whether you are a Postmillennialist
Aammelinist
And I would hope none of you are premillenialist
Peter is telling the crowd here that what Joel prophesied is currently happening.
And Joel said this would happen in the last days.
So during this miracle of the Holy Spirit descending on them and their speaking or hearing in different languages.
They are proclaiming the things of God to each other.
Men and Women are proclaiming the things of God according to this prophecy
And what is true regarding Joel 1:21 in Moses’s Day is true in Peters Day and it is true today as well.
Verse 21 of Joel Prophecy
And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
And on what bases can they be saved.
How can a man who is separated from God by his sin be saved.
Peter proclaims in verses 22-24 when he declares to them the gospel

Verses 22-24 Peter Proclaims the Gospel

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

So what has Peter Just proclaimed
He proclaimed that
Jesus who willingly gave himself up
According to the Foreknowledge of God.
The definite plan of God.
You know the man who you crucified and killed by your
Blood thirsty and lawless hands.
God raised him up loosing the pangs of death.
He couldn’t be held by death becasue he was the innocent
sinless ‘spottless lamb of God who came to die
For your sinfull deeds.
even the deeds you did when you killed him.
And what do you have to be perplexed about
What are you worried about
The only thing that should worry these men
or us today
is if we don’t believe the crucifiction to have happed
and If we don’t believe Christ has risen and sits at the right hand of God the Father.
If you obey God through what the prophet Joel said
you have nothing to worry about
Joel said

And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Not might be saved
But Shall be saved.
Don’t shrug off the message of the Gospel
Don’t believe some of it and leave other parts of it.
Believe it all
And call on the name of the Lord
These men are not drunk
these men didn’t make this up
And we truly have a God who calls all men everywhere to repent of their sins and call on this God Man Jesus Christ for Salvation.
And what happens
We will go into this in more detail at a future date.
But the Narrative is to good to not read And close our retelling of this great event in church history.

Verses 25-36 More prophesies fulfilled

English Standard Version (Chapter 2)
25 For David says concerning him,“ ‘I saw the Lord always before me,for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;26  therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;my flesh also will dwell in hope.27  For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,or let your Holy One see corruption.28  You have made known to me the paths of life;you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord,“Sit at my right hand,35  until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
And then we have this miraculous work of the spirit of God in verses 37-40.

Verses 37-40 All those who believed 3000 are saved

37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
What are we to do?
Peter instructed us to
Repent and
Be Baptized
The Holy Spirit is given to us
And we are to be exhorted by the Word of God Continually As these saint were.
And who is this promise to
The promise is for our children and neighbors and all that are around us that the Lord calls to himself.
And lets pray to that end that we would see 3000 saved here in the city of Wichita Falls.
And that we and our children and our neighbors would all call on the name Of the Lord Jesus Christ
And that the Spirit of God would continue his miraculous work here in Wichita Falls.
