When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

I. Upon This Rock (Matt 16:17).
I. Upon This Rock (Matt 16:17).
A. The Bible records in Matt 16:13 that Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi and asked his disciples “who do men say that the Son of Man is?” In the Old Testament, Ezekiel is given the title Son of man by God and that title is given to denote is human frailty. So when Jesus asks the question “who do people say the Son of Man is” the disciples are thinking along the lines of a prophet, therefore, they start naming prophets: John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets they replied. Peter, had an inside track in knowing who Jesus really was. The Son of Man was also a messianic title and Peter says “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The Christ, the Christos, the anointed one, the messiah, the promised one that would bring salvation and deliverance.
B. Christ then tells Simon, “blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven,” See, Simon received a heavenly revelation. In order for you to really know who God is, in order for you to know who Jesus is, you can’t get from flesh and blood only.....you need to learn....you need to have you’re own person encounter with the Lord!
C. Christ says “I also say to you that you are Peter (Cephas/Petros) metaphorically speaking you are a rock, you are a boulder. See Simon (Peter) was a very outspoken and forward individual, sometimes he was known to be brash. Jesus says upon this “petra” upon this rock I’ll build. To build first off signifies to build or establish but it also means to advance ones spiritual condition. I want you to remember that one.....to build, to establish, and to advance ones spiritual condition. What is Christ going to build. Christ Jesus says “my church” my ekklesia, my congregation, a people who are called out. The original format of ekklesia suggested the calling out of people from their homes to gather together for a meeting. However, according to New Testament vernacular Jesus would not people out of their homes to gather, Jesus would call people out of sin and create a congregation of those who have been called out of sin! That’s why you cannot willfully practice sin and be a part of Christ’s Church.....you may be a member of someone’s church.....but you are not a member of His church.....and His church is what counts. Christ’s church is a holy church, Christ’s church is a church without spot, wrinkle, or blemish:
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
When Jesus calls you out of sin, He uses his word to wash you and clean you up! That word, cleans you up, it irons out all of the rough parts and that’s why the devil has seduced so many people with music. People’s attention are held as long as the music is playing but when time for the word.....their attention is gone. I received a report from our livestream and noticed that most people tune in for the music but then there is a sharp decline when it is time for the word. Music is good and it has it’s place....BUT IT IS THE WORD THAT IS GOING TO KEEP YOU! IT IS THE WORD OF GOD THAT IS GOING TO SAVE YOU, IT IS THE WORD OF GOD THAT IS GOING TO CLEAN YOU UP AND GET ALL OF THE ROUGH SPOTS OUT OF YOU! IT IS THE WORD THAT IS GOING TO BUILD YOUR FAITH......SO THEN FAITH COMES BY HEARING AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD (the message of Jesus Christ, the gospel of Jesus Christ produces faith, God’s word produces faith). You can listen to music all day.....and the devil doesn’t care if you listen to music.....but when you listen to God’s word....that’s when he gets scared.....because that word can become a weapon, that word can loose the chains that bound, that word.....when it is sent.....it can heal you! It was the word that brought us out of sin.....it was the gospel of Jesus Christ that delivered us, and it is the gospel that is delivering and it will deliver.
Jesus gave Simon an experience similar to Abram....he changed his name. Simon had been known as Simon Bar Jona (Simon son of Jona) which is also translated son of Yohanna (John). But now Christ says you are Simon Cephas, Simon the Rock and I’m going to build my church on you, through you. That was a prophetic statement. Jesus said I’m going to give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have be bound in heaven, and whatever you shalt loose on earth shall be loose in heaven. Jesus was going to do something amazing with Simon.
II. Peter’s denial (Luke 22:54-62).
II. Peter’s denial (Luke 22:54-62).
A. So Simon thought in his mind......ahhhhh yeah......Jesus is giving me props and he’s going to build the church through me. So he’s feeling himself now. But then in Matthew 26:31-35
Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
Jesus had been betrayed, Judas left out during supper time and went before the Sanhedrin and offered to turn Jesus over to them for 30 pieces of silver. Jesus says, you’re all going to fall away tonight......you’re going to deny me, you’re going to be offended, you’re going to disassociate yourself from me. But after I’m risen I will go before you into Galilee. I want to speak to those who feel like God doesn’t want to have anything to do with them. I want to speak to those who feel like they messed up too many times and that feel like God is done with them. Listen to what the Lord is telling them.....I know that you’re going to mess up.....but I still have plans for you! My God. Now I want to speak to those who messed up but God had plans for.....is there anyone here that can give God praise that in spite of your mess ups.....God still had plans for you! Some of us were messed up.....we wasn’t thinking about God but God was thinking about us......oh I feel a praise right there. Some of us were in the church and we were doing wrong and we were opposing God in our way of living.....but God was still thinking about us!
That’s just like God.....it sounds like God because he told the Israelites:
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
I don’t care what you are in, I don’t care what you are going through, I don’t care what you did last night, or what you did this week......God said “I know the thoughts that I think toward you.....thought of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” It doesn’t mean that God won’t discipline you when you fall into sin or when you practice sin.....but know that God says I have good thoughts toward you. I want to deliver, I want to set you free, I want to heal you, I want to build you, I want to bring you out, I want to restore you! Jesus said you all are going to fall away from me.....but I want you to meet me....come on here.....I still want to be a part of your life.....I want you to meet me in Galilee once I’m risen.
B. Peter, says “hmph” “all men shall be offended because of you, yet will I never be offended.” Yeah, the outspoken one speaks up and he is sure in himself.
Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
See you cannot stand on your own......Christ is the one that helps you to stand. That’s one of the problems with those who are babes in Christ. They get so discouraged when they fall into sin and they think God is angry with them and they feel like they can’t live holy, they feel like going to church and living right is too hard. They feel like they can’t stand......and the truth of the matter is that by yourself you can’t stand. You need the Lord to be in your life, you need the Lord to keep you. You need to put your trust in the Lord and continue to turn to the Lord. Even when you fall.....confess your faults.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
You say well....I’ve done it so many times I keep messing up.
Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
Jesus says we should forgive unlimited times.....why? Because God forgives us time, after time, after time, after time. That doesn’t mean that we can continue to practice or live in sin:
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
We have to die to sin.....we have to die to disobedience. Still God who is rich in mercy forgives us over and over and over again.
III. The Lord will restore.
III. The Lord will restore.
A. So the bible says(Matt 26:69-75) that Peter did exactly what he said he wasn’t going to do. Jesus told him, before the cock crows you’ll deny me three times. The arrested Jesus and Peter tried to hang around to see what was going to happen to his friend/master. The people hanging around the gate looked at Peter and said “we know you.....you are one of Jesus’ disciples.” and Peter denied the Lord....the happened three times and all three time Peter denies the Lord and ends up cursing on the last one. The rooster crows and Peter remember what the Lord said and he wept bitterly. He failed the Lord, he turned his back on Jesus, when the Lord needed him most....he failed the Lord. Peter probably thought within himself “Jesus told me I was to be a rock......I was suppose to be one who is steady and dependable, I’m suppose to have strength and firmness of soul, courageous and unyielding, but when I was faced with pressure.....I gave in, I relented, I was afraid, I turned from God, I sinned. One of the things that causes us to sin is PRESSURE! Pressure causes us to sin, pressure causes us to give into peer-pressure, pressure will make you an alcoholic, pressure will make you a drug addict, pressure will cause you to become a porn-addict, pressure will cause you to lash out in anger, pressure will cause you sit in jealousy, pressure will cause you to experiment into homosexuality and lesbianism, pressure will cause you to get in fights and arguments......PRESSURE CAN PRODUCE SIN! Peter felt pressure and when he felt it.....he gave into it and failed. He thought it was over now.....I can’t be what the Lord wants me to be now.
B. But the Lord did something amazing. John 21:15-17
Then Jesus said in verse 19 “Follow me”. All of this meant that Jesus restored Peter! Jesus is a restorer. Maybe someone here you’ve been faced with some pressure and that pressure has called you give up on God. Maybe you haven’t given up on God but wavered in your faith.
