Where do we see Jesus’s Divinity?

Word is Eternal (v. 1)
Word is God (v. 1)
Word participated in Creation (v. 3, 10)
Word is Life and Light (vv. 4-5)
Power to confer the status of “Children of God” through belief in his name (vv. 12-13)
Glory (v. 14)
Greater than John the Baptist (v. 15)
Gift through Jesus is greater than gift through Moses (vv. 16-17)
Reveals God (v. 18)

Where do we see Jesus’s Humanity?

He was in the world (v. 10)
Came to his own (v. 11)
Word became flesh (v. 14)
Word dwelt among us (v. 14)
Compared to John, Moses (vv. 15, 17)

What work of Jesus does John emphasize? And why?

John is all about Jesus Christ being the only one who truly reveals the Father (v. 18)
Why is this work so important?
It indicates that all previous revelations were incomplete
(Adam, Abraham, Noah, Moses, David)
In fact, John describes Jesus’ work as a New Genesis AND a New Exodus
New Genesis
Creation!!
The incarnation represents a whole new beginning for humanity!!
New Exodus
Not the Red Sea, but the Tabernacle
God doesn’t deliver for no reason … he delivers so that we may know him, and know him intimately
Jesus is that very same presence of God enfleshed as a human among us

“Belief That” (Story) to “Belief In” (Testimony)

Notice the shift between vv. 1-13 and vv. 14-18
3rd person singular to 1st person plural
Word-God language to Only Son-Father language
Name drop in v. 17
THE POINT in v. 18

Why does John Describe Jesus in this Way?

John 20:31 CSB
But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
For belief that brings life!!
