I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said: Strike the capitals of the pillars so that the thresholds shake; knock them down on the heads of all the people. Then I will kill the rest of them with the sword. None of those who flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape.

“HOW DID WE GET HERE?” (put yourself in Israel’s shoes…)
Nowhere to run…nowhere to hide! [Amos 9.1-4]
Whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on! [Amos 9.7-10]
Better questions: Who brought us here? Where do we go next?
Regarding Righteousness…God’s All About It! [Amos 9.5-6]
Regarding Righteousness…God’s All About It! [Amos 9.5-6]
From the declaration of Righteousness Lost to the rightly displayed Righteousness Shown…God has been (& remains the one calling ALL the shots).
Amos 9.5…
5a = Amos 4.13 “He is here: the one who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, the one who makes the dawn out of darkness and strides on the heights of the earth. The Lord, the God of Armies, is his name.”
5b = Amos 8.8 “Because of this, won’t the land quake and all who dwell in it mourn? All of it will rise like the Nile; it will surge and then subside like the Nile in Egypt.”
Amos 9.6…
6 = Amos 5.8-9 “The one who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns darkness into dawn and darkens day into night, who summons the water of the sea and pours it out over the surface of the earth— the Lord is his name. He brings destruction on the strong, and it falls on the fortress.”
God is God…and holy, righteous…and we...
1 Peter 1.15-16 “But as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct; for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy.”
Leviticus 19.1-2; 11.44-45; 20.7...
God’s Goal…Righteousness Renewed! [Amos 9.11-15]
God’s Goal…Righteousness Renewed! [Amos 9.11-15]
In “THAT” day… (v. 11)
Amos 5.18-20 “Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! What will the day of the Lord be for you? It will be darkness and not light. It will be like a man who flees from a lion only to have a bear confront him. He goes home and rests his hand against the wall only to have a snake bite him. Won’t the day of the Lord be darkness rather than light, even gloom without any brightness in it?”
Woe…& Whoa! (Woe…judgement, discipline; Whoa…repentance, resotration)
Amos 9.11!
Amos 9.14… “my people Israel!”
…so, let’s fully talk about THAT DAY...
Acts 15.15-18 “And the words of the prophets agree with this, as it is written: After these things I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. I will rebuild its ruins and set it up again, so that the rest of humanity may seek the Lord— even all the Gentiles who are called by my name— declares the Lord who makes these things known from long ago.”
In the ‘wake of the Gospels’…&… [don’t forget your telescopes!]

Through the Minor Prophets…we see God’s heart for his people…God’s requirements for his people…and God’s promises for his people. The beauty of God is…he hasn’t changed. From the OT to the NT through Christian History to this very day…we can see and know God’s heart for us…his requirements for us…and his promises to us!
For these reasons, I am excited to begin the study with you next Sunday (& the following Wednesday…et al. …) of Dane Ortland’s book: Gentle & Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers.
One example: John 6.37-39 “Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. This is the will of him who sent me: that I should lose none of those he has given me but should raise them up on the last day.””
I will plant them on their land, and they will never again be uprooted from the land I have given them. The Lord your God has spoken.
