Slavery
Matrix - The fear of secretly being enslaved or slowly being enslaved
Chronicles of Narnia - Edmund eating Turkish Delights
Freedom to be myself without anyone else unless I so choose - freedom of choice
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

Desire’s Enslavement

Personality?
Trespasses as breaks in relationship/ threats of abandonment
Rich vs poor
Sexuality
The Culture War?
Conservative - the mastery of desire to follow culture’s expectations
Progressive - the mastery of self to follow my own desires regardless of what anyone else may do
what if having the freedom of choice without actually choosing what is truly greatest and best is slavery?
if all choices are equally valid but not sufficient to lasting happiness, then freedom of choice is a mask that hides slavery.
if all choices are about my lasting happiness, then freedom of choice is a mask that hides slavery

Redemption’s Riches

Not cast out -adopted
Not left out - chosen
Not about you - free
But you are truly known in your weakness and trespasses of the past as well as the riches of the future
Because your mistakes and evil are transformed into good
Romans 8
God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense
1 Corinthians 8:5–6 ESV
5 For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

Being Redeemed

Matthew 16:24–27 ESV
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
One of the first western missionaries, Leonard Dober (1706-1766), gave this as his motivation for missions:
Since it is desired of me to make known my reason, I can say that my disposition was never to travel during this time [that period in his life], but only to ground myself more steadfastly in my Savior; that when the gracious count came back from his trip to Denmark and told me about the slaves, it gripped me so that I could not get free of it. I vowed to myself that if one other brother would go with me, I would become a slave, and would tell him so, and [also] what I had experienced from our Savior: that the word of the cross in its lowliness shows a special strength to souls. As for me, I thought: even if helpful to no one in it [my commitment] I could still give witness through it of obedience to our Savior! I leave it to the good judgment of the congregation and have no other ground than this I thought: that on the island there still are souls who cannot believe because they have not heard.
1 Corinthians 9:19–23 ESV
19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.
1 Corinthians 7:17–24 ESV
17 Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. 18 Was anyone at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. 19 For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. 20 Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called. 21 Were you a bondservant when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.) 22 For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ. 23 You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men. 24 So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.
