Review: Romans 9

How Israel missed the blessings of her birthright
God’s sovereign will demonstrated in the Elect
God’s sovereign will demonstrated in the lost

This Part

Israel’s need for the gospel - Romans 10.1-13
Israel’s rejection of the gospel - Romans 10.14-21

Israel’s Need for the Gospel

Israel was zealous - Romans 10.1-3
Romans 10:1–3 NKJV
1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
But zeal without the corresponding knowledge/understanding is worthless.
Israel was knowledgeable in the law, but ignorant of God’s righteousness
Jeremiah 4:22 NKJV
22 “For My people are foolish, They have not known Me. They are silly children, And they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, But to do good they have no knowledge.”
Jeremiah 9:3 NKJV
3 “And like their bow they have bent their tongues for lies. They are not valiant for the truth on the earth. For they proceed from evil to evil, And they do not know Me,” says the Lord.
Ignorance of God’s righteousness leads to self-righteousness
Knowledge of God’s righteousness leads one to CHRIST.
Romans 10:4 NKJV
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
why? because one will realize his unworthiness before the RIghteous God
Paul compares the 2 righteousnesses - Rom 10.5-10
Romans 10:5–10 NKJV
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.” 6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
the righteousness by the law -
requires the person to produce the righteousness of God
the righteousness by faith -
requires the person to believe in the One who is righteous and who can fulfill the righteousness required by the law
There’s more -
righteousness by faith isn’t hard to produce - one only has to confess with the mouth what the heart believes
Romans 10:11–13 NKJV
11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Israel’s Rejection of the Gospel

God has provided the means of salvation - Romans 10.14-15
Romans 10:14–15 NKJV
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”
we call on God because we believe Him
we believe in Him because we have heard
we have heard of him because God sent a preacher
But not all Israel responded to the gospel - Romans 10.16-18
Romans 10:16–17 NKJV
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
only those who heard, can possibly believe
Still, not everyone who has heard, believes!
Note - Isaiah 53 is the most ignored part of Scriptures by the Jews
Israel heard, but did not believe - Romans 10.18
Romans 10:18 NKJV
18 But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: “Their sound has gone out to all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.”
Israel knew, but did not believe - Romans 10.19
Romans 10:19 NKJV
19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says: “I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation, I will move you to anger by a foolish nation.”
people outside of Israel are generally called foolish nations, compared to Israel
the Jews were given the knowledge of God
Romans 2:17–20 NKJV
17 Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God, 18 and know His will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law.
The Scripture has already prophesied of this present condition - Romans 10.20-21
Romans 10:20–21 NKJV
20 But Isaiah is very bold and says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me.” 21 But to Israel he says: “All day long I have stretched out My hands To a disobedient and contrary people.”
John 15:16 NKJV
16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.

Conclusion

Israel’s rejection of God was not by total ignorance
but they were not ignorant of God’s commandments and statutes
they were ignorant of God’s righteousness only because they were more concerned about their own righteousness
Israel’s rejection of the gospel was not by accident
They heard the gospel
They knew the truth
STILL, they rejected Christ!
Serve God with passion, but your passion should come with true understanding of His will.
True passion is driven by a clear understanding of God’s divine character.
True passion is driven by a clear understanding of one’s need for Jesus.
