Jesus and the Crowds
Jesus and the Crowds
Matthew 7:28-29
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
A “scribe” was someone who learned the Old Testament expertly and taught it in a synagogue.
“Astonished”- to be or become astounded to such as degree as to nearly lose one’s composure (Bible Sense Lexicon; cf. Matt. 13:54; 19:25; 23:33).
His teaching had “authority.” The scribes and Pharisees were religious authorities but it was based upon their ability to quote Scripture. Jesus spoke directly and reinterpreted the Law (“You have heard that it was said...”).
Walking with Christ
Walking with Christ
Christ is the foundation for your life (Col. 2:6-7)
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Whatever you do in word or deed to “in his name” (Col. 3:17)
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
“Everyone wants a Savior, but very few people want a Lord and Master.”
“Everyone wants a Savior, but very few people want a Lord and Master.”
Romans 6:17-18
17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
