*THE INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT*
*                                                                   *                                                                  C.Peña; 1~/11~/09

I.                   Open
                        *(SLIDE 1, Bible Question)  (SLIDE 2, Title)       *
!! A.                This is something you will read in religious material or hear in religious        conversations a lot.
!!! 1.
The majority of religious people believe in the indwelling of the Holy          Spirit.
a.
They should, saints should, because it is taught by scripture.
b.
*(SLIDE) *1Cor.3:16;
*(SLIDE) *2Cor.6:16;
*(SLIDE) *Eph.3:17;
*(SLIDE) *2Tim.1:14
!!! 2.                  The problem with their belief and teaching on this subject is that, as with    many other biblical topics, they deviate from sound scriptural teaching.
!! B.                 *(SLIDE) *The important question is not, “Does the Holy Spirit dwell in us?”  I       firmly believe the answer to that is yes, and on this point we agree with many of         our religious friends because they agree with the Bible.
The important question,        and this is where we differ from our religious friends, *(SLIDE) *is “How does the        Holy Spirit dwell in us?”
!
II.
Holy Spirit dwells
!! A.                *(SLIDE) *Let’s begin by establishing who the Holy Spirit dwells in.
We will use    some passages from the book of Romans as the main text of our study.
!!! 1.                  *(MsClk) *Rom.8:9-11
*(SLIDE)*
                                    a.
*(SLIDE) (MsClk) *This epistle was written to Christians.                                                                 *(SLIDE) *Rom.1:7
“called as saints”
                                    b.
*(SLIDE) (MsClk) *This was written to those who obeyed the                                                          gospel; the plan of redemption.
*(SLIDE) *Rom.6:3-4;
*(SLIDE) *17-                                                 18
                                    c.
*(SLIDE) (MsClk) *This was written to those in whom the Spirit of                                                  God dwelt.
*(SLIDE) *Rom.8:9-11
!!! 2.                  *(SLIDE) (MsClk) *You cannot belong to God (vs.9), be in fellowship with             Him, if the Spirit does not dwell in you.
We see from this how important        the subject is.
!! B.                 *(SLIDE)  *Another important question is, “How does the Christian receive the        Holy Spirit?”
!!! 1.                  *(MsClk) *The answer is by obeying the plan of redemption.
a.
We’ve already shown that you must be a Christian.
b.
*(MsClk) *To be a Christian you must – B, R, C, Bpt.
– for                                                                remission of sins
!!! 2.                  *(MsClk) *There is an important point I want to make about Acts 2:38.
Peter clearly says that those who obey the plan of redemption will “receive     the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
*(SLIDE) * Acts 2:38
                                    a.
The gift that Peter is speaking of here is the direct result of                                                              obedience to the plan of redemption; it is salvation (redemption).
It is the salvation into which the Holy Spirit leads you through the                                                         Holy Spirit inspired revelation of the gospel.
b.
*(SLIDE) (MsClk) *It includes a restoration of spiritual fellowship                                                    with God.
                                    c.
*(SLIDE) *(Rom.8:9-11)
*(SLIDE) *I believe “in the flesh” means to                                                 live in or according to fleshly desires and impulses.
It means to be                                                  carnally minded instead of spiritually minded.
Such an individual                                                  does not display any of the characteristics of the spiritually                                                                 regenerated, *(SLIDE) *1Cor.3:3.
*(SLIDE) *To be “in the Spirit” is                                                    the exact opposite.
It is to be thinking and living like one whose                                                       focus is on the spiritual things of God and is not dominated by                                                  fleshly appetites, *(SLIDE) *Gal.5:24-25.
d.
*(SLIDE)  *Such an individual is one whose life is greatly                                                                  influenced (dominated) by the divine revelation delivered by the                                                     Holy Spirit.
If we are not living according to the teaching of God                                                  we are not His children, *(SLIDE) *1Jn.3:24.
e.
*(SLIDE)  *When the scriptures speak of the Spirit of God or the                                                      Spirit of Christ dwelling in us they are speaking of the influence of                                                 divinely inspired teaching upon our lives (that which is revealed by                                                 God through Christ through the Holy Spirit).
*(SLIDE) Jn.16:13-                                                           15 (SLIDE) 1Cor.2:10-13
* Notice that Gal.2:20 and Eph.3.17
explain that Christ dwells in us through faith.
*(SLIDE) Gal.2:20                                                      (SLIDE) Eph.3:17 * Add to these verses Rom.10:17 which                                                                    explains how saving faith is produced and you see how it all is                                                  connected to the divine revelation in scripture.
*(SLIDE)                                                                 Rom.10:17
* To me the key point is that the Holy Spirit has His                                                       influence on Christians *through* the Spirit inspired word of God.
                                                1)         There are some O.T. passages I want us to look at.
*(SLIDE)  *Ezek.36:26-27
Here God says that His Spirit                                                                   would cause them to walk in obedience to His statutes.
Consider this in light of what the following passages teach.
2)         *(SLIDE)  *Jer.31:31-33
Notice that here God says that He                                                               will put His law within them and write it on their hearts.
This law would influence them to do good.
It seems to me                                                              this means that the Spirit would work through the medium                                                                    of the written law of God, which the Christian would take                                                                      into his heart, and follow on a daily basis.
!! C.                 This leads to the question of *how* the Holy Spirit dwells in us.
The question of      how the Holy Spirit dwells in us is an important one.
!!! 1.                  *(SLIDE) *Does He dwell in us directly and personally; God literally in us?              *(MsClk) *Or does He dwell in us indirectly by some means or agency such     as the inspired word?
!!!! a.        (MsClk) This is where most disagreement will be found.
!!! b.        *(MsClk) *The Holy Spirit dwells in us, personally but, through the   word (gospel).
We’ve already shown this.
!! D.                *(SLIDE) *What is the purpose of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit?
!!! 1.                  *(MsClk) *First let me state what the purpose of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is *not*.
It is not miraculous, that is, for the working of miracles or           supernatural gifts.
!!! 2.                  *(MsClk) *Consider some of what is accomplished by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
a.
*(MsClk) *He leads us in God’s way.
*(SLIDE) * Rom.8:12-14
b.
*(MsClk) *He bears witness with our Spirit.
*(SLIDE) * Rom.8:16
c.
*(MsClk) *He is a seal of God’s possession.
*(SLIDE) * Eph.1:13-14;
*(SLIDE) *2Cor.1:22;
5:5
                                                1)         An earnest of the Christian’s hope of redemption.
d.
*(MsClk) *He strengthens us.
*(SLIDE) *Eph.3:14-16
!! E.                 *(SLIDE) *Some other points:  The Spirit’s indwelling and Christ’s indwelling are    interchangeable.
