Now we look at what it means to Build your life upon your Lord, Jesus Christ
Jesus disciples live their life on His Word.
Luke 6:39–49 (AV)
Luke 6:39–49 KJV 1900
And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye. For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. 41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye. 43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. 46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Introduction

60 second alarm in Mexico City (slide)
Let me sound the alarm for you today everyone of you should examine yourself and make sure you have a sure foundation.
And we live in a church culture today that delights in listening, but runs from doing.
There is great emphasis in the Bible on the fact that our salvation cannot be earned by works. Book of Galatians, large portions of Romans.
Ephesians 2:8–9 (AV)
Ephesians 2:8–9 KJV 1900
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
I would not want to preach a false Gospel by preaching a message of works.
Likewise, I would not want to preach an incomplete Gospel by causing you to believe that faith does not transform a person’s decision making and affections of their heart is saving faith.
We also have portions of Scripture that emphasize this truth. 1 John, James, this passage.
Luke 6:46 (AV)
Luke 6:46 KJV 1900
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Another way it could be said is “why are you so busy building a home to protect you and forgetting to include me”

We all are homebuilders

Luke 6:46–49 (AV)
Luke 6:46–49 KJV 1900
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

The wise and the foolish man were both engaged in precisely the same work.

They were equally impressed with the need of building a house.
Both gathered the supplies they believe needed
Equally well skilled in architecture.
Both finished their structure.

The moral lost man.

Imagine your neighbor who plays with his kids, always willing to lend you a hand, volunteers for a local non-profit. Just the kind of guy you like as a neighbor. He just doesn’t like to talk about religion.
People who built their home without a foundation still can be good neighbors with well behaved kids and keep nice manicured lawns.
Jonathan Edwards writes a good amount about what you might call “sinful goodness” he would encourage us to consider it as “limited goodness.” There is a beauty in their actions of good but not one that reflects the glory of God just the goodness of man.
The Bible attests that he is an unrepentant sinner still guilty before our righteous Lord.
Romans 3:25 (AV)
Romans 3:25 KJV 1900
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Romans 3:10 (AV)
Romans 3:10 KJV 1900
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Colossians 3:25 (AV)
Colossians 3:25 KJV 1900
But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

We all desire to be protected from the storm to come

We are born with an understanding their is a God and we are not Him.
Romans 2:11–15 (KJV 1900)
Romans 2:11–15 KJV 1900
For there is no respect of persons with God. For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

We are not talking simply about the trials of life but the wrath of God to come.

Luke 6:49 (AV)
Luke 6:49 KJV 1900
But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
Is any lostness worse than remaining lost while believing you’re found?
Jonathan shared about people from his city would ride their bikes to the Basilica then crawl the last way.
It is certainly true that we have an anchor of the soul.
A house prepared for THAT DAY will be a house best prepared for EVERY DAY.
But here we are talking about a foundation that allows us to be ready for more than an earthquake but the day of judgement.

It is easy to say you are a disciple of Jesus

Luke 6:46
Luke 6:46 KJV 1900
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
But it isn’t in just what they say that let’s you know if they are a disciple but you can know a tree from its fruit.
Luke 6:43
Luke 6:43 KJV 1900
For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
You can know something about the foundation of a home by the way a person lives in it.
Jesus is saying it's not enough to claim to be His disciple. We must do what He says, love what He loves, live by His Word.
Jesus is warning here against a verbal profession that is not accompanied by a conversion of life.

Great emphasis is placed on the difference of the foundations.

Every one of us is building a house with our life, and that house is either built on a firm foundation or not.

One dug deep.

Luke 6:48 (KJV 1900)
Luke 6:48 KJV 1900
He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

The other built upon the earth.

Luke 6:49 (KJV 1900)
Luke 6:49 KJV 1900
But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
First home did not have a crawl space. I did not know that was an option. It was just on a concrete slab.

Correct doctrine is not enough

Many know to say “Lord, Lord”

Emotions are inadequate

Their plea of “Lord, Lord” most certainly was full of expectation.

Activity can be deceiving

Matthew 7:21–22 (KJV 1900)
Matthew 7:21–22 KJV 1900
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Story of men building a house to break “El Chapo” out of prison.

Jesus is the only teacher safe to follow

Luke 6:39 (AV)
Luke 6:39 KJV 1900
And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?
39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

A blind guide points us back to the pharisees

They aren’t able to see and until they address it won’t be able to help others.
Luke 6:42 (AV)
Luke 6:42 KJV 1900
Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

You are going to build but who are you going to listen to. Listen to the words of Jesus.

Matthew 12:50 (AV)
Matthew 12:50 KJV 1900
For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Luke 11:28 (AV)
Luke 11:28 KJV 1900
But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
John 13:17 (AV)
John 13:17 KJV 1900
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
John 14:15 (AV)
John 14:15 KJV 1900
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 14:24 (AV)
John 14:24 KJV 1900
He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
John 15:14 (AV)
John 15:14 KJV 1900
Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

John knew these words and under inspiration says.

1 John 2:3 (AV)
1 John 2:3 KJV 1900
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

Jesus disciples live their life on His Word.

Not speaking of Jesus and a book but speaking of Jesus and His Word!
Often hear people say “he professes to be a believer but doesn’t live like it.”

Born of the Word

James 1:18 (KJV 1900)
James 1:18 KJV 1900
Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Strong language here.
1 John 2:4 (AV)
1 John 2:4 KJV 1900
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
This is the picture. God, by His grace, puts His Word in our hearts, His Spirit in our hearts.
James 1:21 (AV)
James 1:21 KJV 1900
Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Unwilling to leave it

John 6:66–68 (KJV 1900)
John 6:66–68 KJV 1900
From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

It is the perfect law of liberty

James 1:25 (AV)
James 1:25 KJV 1900
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
He’s not referring to Old Testament Mosaic Law. This is a law perfected in Christ, the Words of Christ and the truth of Christ that liberates and frees us.
As soon as we start talking about obedience to laws and commands, people throw up the hands, “Legalism” and they’re running away.
Psalm 119:32 (AV)
Psalm 119:32 KJV 1900
I will run the way of thy commandments, When thou shalt enlarge my heart.
32 I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.
We realize in ourselves we cannot obey the Law. It’s the Word planted in us, the Spirit in us, the grace of God in us, moves us to follow the Law. It was Jesus who fulfilled the law completely in our place.

Obey the Word Wholeheartedly

Theme verse of the book of James
James 1:22 (AV)
James 1:22 KJV 1900
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Bottom line is what James is saying is the Word invokes action.
Thankful for God’s direction as we lay down bricks and build our lives. I am not always obedient but I always recognize His right in my life to tell me how to build my home.
If there is no action, then there has been no acceptance of the Word.
If your life is built on listening to the Words of Jesus alone, then your life will ultimately and eternally end in destruction.

This goes right in the face of what is commonly believed today, this idea you can accept Jesus, but not obey Jesus.

You’ve not accepted anything if it’s not coming to life in action. Now, obviously, none of us is perfect, but the picture is when you accept the Word of Jesus, when you receive Jesus humbly, His Word is planted in you and it is moving you to action. And you can tell the Word is in you by what’s happening outside of you. And if there’s nothing happening outside of us, then the question is, is there anything inside of us?

Conclusion

Good news for the believer.
Don’t we so often find ourselves right there, worried that we’re going to make the wrong decision?
Here’s the beauty: His Word is planted in you. As you abide in Him, His Spirit moves you. So continue to abide in Him and trust His goodness.
God wants obedience to happen in your life more than you do. He’s going to lead you by His Word He has planted in our heart.
Proverbs 3:5–6 KJV 1900
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Brothers, what area or areas of your life has God been saying, “Do this,” that you’ve not done?
Warning to the unbeliever
Maybe, maybe this morning God has brought you here for the first time to realize that you are deceiving yourself spiritually.
2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV 1900
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Mexico City is sinking. Buildings that once did not have basements now do. Let that be the same for you. Today you should dig deep and leave with a foundation.
The saddest road to hell is the one that runs under the pulpit, past the Bible, and through the middle of warnings and invitations. JC Ryle
