Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Introduction: Review. The need to make disciples is worship and a primary function of the church
THE IMPERATIVE
Make disciples (math-e-te-ou) aorist active imperative 2nd person plural
imperative=command of importance
plural=individual and collective (individual and church)
a disciple is a learner (we are learning to live this new life in Christ)
GOD IS THE ULTIMATE DISCIPLE MAKER
reveal some tension and follow the commission. we are not in this alone. he said He is with us until the end
I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.
Our confidence in making disciples is not in our ability but in His strength. We need to be reminded of this because some times it doesn't feel like we are being effective.
WE MAKE DISCIPLES BY PREACHING THE GOSPEL
teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
There are many things that we are important but this is what is the most important. (everything that we do ought to be from this and ultimately lead to this).
Narrowness and broadness of the Gospel. (example)
THE SHIRKING CROSS PIC (We need to constantly be reminded of the Gospel)
WE MAKE DISCIPLES OF THE CULTURE
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Nations=ethos=culture/people group
be aware of the brokenness in that culture
look for where God is working already (they have shadows but Christ is the substance) (hear people stories) (get to know people) (don't comprise your faith) (within culture there is sub-cultures)
Paul became all things to all people
Although I am free from all and not anyone’s slave, I have made myself a slave to everyone, in order to win more people. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win Jews; to those under the law, like one under the law—though I myself am not under the law—to win those under the law. To those who are without the law, like one without the law—though I am not without God’s law but under the law of Christ—to win those without the law. To the weak I became weak, in order to win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I may by every possible means save some. Now I do all this because of the gospel, so that I may share in the blessings.
