A. Jesus claimed to be God:
1. The Son of God is equal with God (John 5:18).
2. Jesus and the Father are one (John 10:27-33).
3. Seeing Jesus is the same as seeing the Father (John 12:44, 45; 14:8-10).
B. The Bible declares the deity of Christ through the titles given him:
1. IMMANUEL: (Isa. 7:14 with Matt 1:18-23) “God with us”
2. THE ALMIGHTY, ALPHA AND OMEGA, BEGINNING AND END, FIRST AND LAST: (Rev 1:8, 17).
3. GOD: (John 1:1; John 1:14; Heb 1:8-12; 1 John 5:20; 1 Tim. 3:16)
4. GOD AND SAVIOR: (2 Peter 1:1; Titus 2:13)
5. MIGHTY GOD, EVERLASTING FATHER, PRINCE OF PEACE: (Isa. 9:6)
6. MY LORD AND MY GOD: (John 20:28).
C. The Jehovah of the Old Testament is the Christ of the New Testament:
1. Jehovah… Self existent or eternal. The Jewish national name for God. (Isa. 40:3 with Matt 3:3; Luke 3:4-6) Lord = Jehovah
2. Both given the title King/Lord of Glory (Psa 24:7-10 with 1 Cor 2:8; James 2:1)
3. Both credited with creation (Isa 40:28; John 1:3; Col 1:16-17; Heb 1:10).
4. Both given the title of “first and last.” (Isa 44:6 with Rev 1:17)
5. Jehovah called Himself “I Am” (Exodus 3:14 with Isa 43:10-13), signifying, “I Am” the one true God. Jesus called Himself “I Am” in (John 8:58).
6. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess as Lord, Jehovah of the Old Testament and Jesus of the New Testament. (Isa 45:23; Rom 14:11; Phil 2:10)
D. The Deity of Christ As Demonstrated In Worship:
1. The Scriptures recognize worship as being due to Deity alone.
a) Christ understood this principle (Matt. 4:10)
b) Peter understood this principle (Acts 10:25-26).
c) Paul and Barnabas knew this principle (Acts 14:8-18).
d) Herod learned this principle the hard way (Acts 12:20-25).
e) The angels understand this principle (Rev. 22:8-9).
2. This being so, the worship of Christ in the N.T. Scriptures would be nothing short of idolatry and blasphemy if Jesus were not God (Ex. 20:1-5-).
3. Jesus not only accepted worship, He invited it (John 13:13; Matt. 14:33; Luke 24:52; John 20:28-31; Luke 5:8).
4. It is the will of God that Christ be worshiped (Heb1:6; Philp. 2:10-11).
E. More Powerful Verses on the Deity of Christ:
1. All the fullness of the Godhead (deity) dwells in Christ (Col. 2:9). Godhead = (theiotes) the divine essence of Godhood. Jesus has the personality and attributes of God because He is God.
2. (John 5:23) Honor = a valuing and refers to the preciousness of Christ to believers.
3. Jesus declares Himself to be equal with God John 5:18 w/ Col. 2:9)
