*“AN ENCOURAGEMENT TO PRAY!”*
*Selected Passages*
*Pastor Robby Roberson*
*January 11, 2009*
* *
“It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer…’”Matthew 21:13a
*This text has continued to haunt me.
The Lord continues to urge me as /an encouragement to pray/.
I would like to do the same this morning.
If I could, I would like to continue to cast vision for this in the life of this church.
I would like to give five things that I hope will encourage you and I to pray.*
* *
*1. **YOU SHOULD ASK INTELLIGENTLY.*
When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.James 4:3
*Addressing the serious matter we call prayer, the Apostle James seems to make it clear that we are often ineffective in prayer is because we are off target.
We should be specific and on target.
Although it is heartwarming to hear a little child pray, “God bless the whole world, Amen,” this is hardly the kind of praying that changes communities and nations*
*2.
**YOU SHOULD ASK CONSISTENTLY.*
* *
Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.Luke 18:1
*Jesus’ parable is such a graphic illustration of this principle.
It happens so often with children.
This much is certain when someone continues to ask day after day for many weeks, one thing is certain –they really long for the answer!
The same is true with our praying Certainly God could answer any (or all) of our prayers the very moment we pray them.
In His wisdom, however, He knows that delaying an answer might teach us even more of the secrets of prayer.
So, He sometimes withholds the blessing for a time, knowing that we will learn the value of being consistent in prayer, even when we don’t see immediate answers to our petitions.
*
*The New Testament elsewhere urges us to consistency:*
Pray without ceasing.1 Thessalonians 5:17
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.Matthew 7:7
*3.
**YOU SHOULD ASK SYSTEMATICALLY.*
So that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.
“Present your case,” says the Lord.
“Set forth your arguments,” says Jacob’s King.Isaiah 41:20-21
*Isn’t that fascinating?!
The Lord wants you to present your case!
Do you bring your “reasons” for prayer before the Lord each day – systematically?
Notice how Hezekiah does this:*
Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it.
Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord.
And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: “O Lord, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth.
You have made heaven and earth.
Give ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to insult the living God.2 Kings 19:14-16
*This is also a good time to ask if you have a goal or plan for your prayer time.
It seems we have a plan or program for everything but prayer.
Maybe it would be helpful to use a prayer list or a World Prayer Map or a journal.*
*4.
**YOU SHOULD ASK FERVENTLY.*
* *
And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.Luke 22:44
*The physician, Luke, in describing the intensity and fervency of Christ’s Gethsemane prayer, said these words.
What fervency!
A person who attacks a problem “earnestly” does so with an intense desire for victory and a stubborn refusal to quit.
He puts his whole effort and being into reaching a desired goal.
So it must be in our praying.
*
*I know, I know – this is the God man!
But, others prayed with earnestness and fervency as well.
Moses pleaded!
Jacob wrestled!
Daniel mourned! Nehemiah was burdened!
And, notice this man in the book of James: *
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
Elijah was a man just like us.
He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.James 5:16-18
*5.
**YOU SHOULD ASK EXPECTANTLY.*
*Unfortunately, the question is – do we believe that God answers prayer?
Do we believe His promise:*
“…the prayer of the upright/ is/ his delight.Proverbs 15:8
*“No truly advanced soul prays just because of the consequences of praying.
The more mature we become the more we pray just to have fellowship with God and for God to use this fellowship how He chooses” W.E. Sangster*
And ye shall seek me, and find/ me/, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.Jeremiah 29:13
“Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.
For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”Matthew
18:19-20
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.
Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.John 15:16
*/“Prayer is the slender nerve that moveth the muscles of Omnipotence” /Charles Spurgeon*
*/“God will do NOTHING but in answer to prayer” /John Wesley*
*/“Prayer is striking the winning BLOW…ministry is GATHERING up the results” /E.M. Bounds*
* *
*Truly effective prayer has many qualities – but at the heart you will find /perseverance/…just stayin’ at it!
Here is an example:*
*/“The great point is never to give up in praying until the answer comes.
I have been praying for 63 years and 8 months for a friend’s conversion.
He is not saved yet, but he will be.
How can it be otherwise, I am praying” /George Mueller*
*The day came when George Mueller’s friend received Christ.
It happened the very moment Mueller’s casket was being lowered into the ground.
There, near an open grave, Mueller’s acquaintance gave his heart to God.
Persistent, fervent prayer had won the battle!*
* *Neh.
6:15*
* *Matt.
14:17*
* *52 weeks in a year*
* *Facing the Giants video*
* *
* *
*“The power of prayer can never be overrated.
They who cannot serve God by preaching need not regret.
If a man can but pray, he can do anything” (Charles Spurgeon)*
