A DEFINITION OF THEOLOGY Theology is the contextualized study, reflection, and articulation of the person and works of God as a paradigmatic science and communal art. Christian theology is ultimately doxological and centered on the Triune God of historic Christian orthodoxy. Cosmology and ontology are traditional branches of metaphysics. It is concerned with explaining the ultimate nature of being and the world. Philosophical theology is a term used to describe the process of doing theology with the aid and support of philosophical reflection, language, and methods. Philosophical theology is sometimes viewed as a sub-category of philosophy of religion, providing ways to understand different doctrines or theological concepts through the use of philosophy. There are typically two different categories in philosophical theology: "The first category includes attempts to demonstrate the truth of religious claims by appeal to evidence available apart from purported divine revelations. The second category includes attempts to demonstrate the consistency and plausibility of theological claims using philosophical techniques." [1] This first category uses what is called natural theology to understand Christian claims. The second appeals to philosophy to understand theological convictions derived from divine revelation. Systematic Theology The integrating study of all theological disciplines. Contextualized study -To place (a word or idea, for example) in a particular context. Articulation- The act of vocal expression; utterance or enunciation: Paradigmatic science-Determination of significant facts, matching facts with predictions of paradigm theory, and articulating paradigm theory- laws, alternative uses, and new applications. Trying to find points of contact between theory and nature. Communal art-that which is rooted in a shared sense of place, tradition or spirit. Doxological- An expression of praise to God, especially a short hymn sung as part of a Christian worship service. A hymn or form of words containing an ascription of praise to God. Orthodoxy - orthodox belief or practice. Of, pertaining to, or conforming to the approved form of any doctrine, philosophy, ideology, etc.
