Matthew 5:1–12 ESV
Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Sermon on the Mount is the first big “speech” given by Jesus. It is a very important one. One speech that told the people how to live by Kingdom standards.
This Sermon has brought a radically different message than what the people were taught by. This message is not about physical blessings that may come from a king or a political stance. No, it is a speech of what the we look like once when we let Jesus be Lord of our lives.
So Jesus has come on the scene as the Messiah and the people have expectations of what He would be like. And this Sermon throws out what they think.
And Jesus starts this sermon with the Beatitudes. lThe series of promises of what blessed looks like. And it is completely different from what we think blessing is.
My Perspective of what blessings are things. In all honesty, that is what my human brain goes to when I hear of a blessing. When you see someone with the new Jordans on or the new iPhone or they going to fancy places, man that man is blessed! #BlessedUp.
In the Bible there is a man by King Solomon, you may have heard him. He was a rich man! He had wisdom and money. So much that it says in 1 Kings 10:23
1 Kings 10:23 ESV
Thus King Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom.
He excelled all of them! Okay so what now? Well the beginning of the next chapter, it says he turned away from God. He got so fixed up on his things that he turned away from God. Feeling self suffecient. Self made.
This is the same man who wrote Ecclesiastes. You know “Meaningless Meaningless, its all Meaningless.” Thats right Solomon, it is with the wrong perspective. Solomon had it all wrong. He put all of his happiness in things, that the word says later in Matthew 6:19
Matthew 6:19 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,
