Question
Question
Poll question (reveal it to online people first)
How old were Abraham and Sarah when Isaac was born?
What does Jehovah Jireh mean?
this is our last lesson on Abraham for a while
Chapter 23-25 Review
Chapter 23-25 Review
chapter 23, Sarah dies at 127
only woman whose age at death is recorded in the Bible
she got to see her son live to be about 37 (he was born at 90)
Abraham buys a cave for her burial
it becomes family burial land: Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah , Jacob eventually
20 So the field and the cave were transferred from the Hittites to Abraham for use as a permanent burial place.
Abraham is buying off the promise that one day this land will belong to his people
after slavery in Egypt
indeed, his grandson will be buried there, when the freed Israelites takes his body with them
Quick Hitter Lesson: have faith for more than this life
faith for eternity, and faith for those who come after you
“I might not see it, but I know God will do it”
David did that with the temple
Jeremiah bought some land when they were about to be captured
we used to have faith for only beyond this life
now it seems we have faith for only this life
we need both, here is a reminder to live beyond this life
Chapter 24 - A bride for Isaac
servant of Abraham had impossible job of making a long trip back to Abraham’s home land to find a wife for Isaac
He had to trust God, and God came through
available lady
relative of the family
she had good character
and she looked good (got more than what he asked for)
12 “O Lord, God of my master, Abraham,” he prayed. “Please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham.
Quick Hitter Lessons:
Abraham had faith that God would help the servant do this impossible task - no need of doubting God now
People are watching your life just like the servant of Abraham.
God will guide you (sometimes you can ask for a sign)
look for character (generous, kind) in a spouse
Chapter 25 - Death of Abraham
Abraham lived to be 175
Abraham took another wife and had more children, but kept them from away from Isaac, and left him as the sole heir (though he gave gifts to others)
I guess he still had some pep in his step
according to timeline, he saw Isaac live to be 75, and saw his grandchildren, twin boys live up to age 14-15
The Main Lesson - God Sees You
The Main Lesson - God Sees You
11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who settled near Beer-lahai-roi in the Negev.
Abraham has moved off the scene but the story continues, so we have studied life of Abraham, but we have been learning about God (hero of the story)
God blessed Isaac
God is still there, still keeping promises
we have seen Beer-lahai-roi before
13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?”
Hagar is not considered a main character, not the main wife, but God saw her
Isaac gets lost in the shuffle between the great Abraham, and Jacob (Israel) . . . but this verse is letting us know that God saw him too
and God sees you! not just the Abraham’s of the world
not just the pastor
not just the famous gospel singer
no matter if the world considers you a main character or not
he sees you to protect, guide (like he helped the servant), help, heal, bless, hear you, correct . . . .
you are not insignificant in God’s eyes, God is paying attention to you
you are not lost in the shuffle, you are not a statistic
1 O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.
2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.
4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.
5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!
7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!
8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.
9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.
11 I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—
12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
17 How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!
18 I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!
