April & May in Jayton. We get a crazy look in our eyes. Busy is the great enemy to our peace.
READ LUKE 10:38-42
Mary and Martha
Intimate friends of Jesus.
Bethany - 2 miles from Jerusalem
Martha’s home. She is being a hostess.
Mary sat at the feet of Jesus.
Unusual for a woman in 1st century Judaism.
To sit at one’s feet was the position of a learner in submission to a teacher.
She took advantage of the moment and wanted to hear everything that Jesus had to say.
Mary was willing to stop and smell the roses.
Waiting quietly on the Lord is more important than being busy.
When was the last time you were able to focus on 1 thing at a time?
People are busier and more miserable than ever.

“Distracted by many tasks.”

Martha’s concern was on her many duties.
Cooking, cleaning, and preparing.
Hosting the son of God was important to her.
Martha did not approve of Mary’s actions.
“Somebody has to do the work around here.”
Martha wanted to do something special for Jesus.
The result was elaborate and unnecessary plans.
How has your “doing” distracted your worship of God?
In or out of church?
There is always something to do. ALWAYS.
Our “to-do” list can become a huge distraction to hear the voice of God.

“Lord, don’t you care?”

Martha went from welcoming Jesus as her guest to blaming Him for not caring about her.
She’d been doing for Jesus and now she was angry.
She was tired of working alone.
Truly, she revealed a hole down deep in her soul.
As holidays approach, I’m reminded of the pressure we often feel to make sure everything is just right.
Does your service to God and others affect your relationships with God and others?
There is a problem if our fellowship with the Lord is hurt by our activity.
You can’t hide from God behind your many tasks.

“It will not be taken away”

Jesus responded gently.
Martha had forgotten the main thing.
Jesus wasn’t saying that there is no work to be done.
Rather, He was saying that when your work damages your relationship with Him, you need to reassess the amount of work and motivation for your service.
Jesus gave Martha permission to stop.
The MOST important thing is our relationship with Christ. A relationship with Jesus cannot be taken away from a person.
We can celebrate with Him in His presence.
We have got to get away from zapping peoples joy with church service. This is supposed to be “life-giving”.
What you currently doing that keeps you from peace with God?
Family schedule
Work
Church
1st impulse is to quit. Instead, allow the Lord to transform your mind.
God, please interrupt us when we become too busy to see you.
