Genesis 3
Genesis 3
Sin is transgressing God’s commands (Gen 3:1-6)
Was the serpent really a snake?
Would it not be unusual to speak with a reptile?
Adam and Eve probably was aware of spirit beings in the garden (angels) It was not uncommon for God to walk with them at the cool of the day (Gen 3:8)
What Eve told the serpent
but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ”
What God actually said-
but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Man has always in his heart desired to add to what God said to make himself more spiritual in his own eyes.
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
This parallels 1 John
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
There are only two ways people sin: Through Lust and lack of faith
But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
Notice Adam was nearby…His sin was a lack of faith. He was not deceived like Eve (1 Tim 2:14) Adam did not believe God for he did not see Eve immediately die.
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
Adam and Eve lived in innocence and now they were fearful. They tried to hid from God.
Sin Brings shame and harm (Gen 3:7-13)
Sin comes with a great cost (Gen 3:14-21)
