Why is Church Important?
Ephesians 4:1-6; 11-16
INTRODUCTION
In 1940’s over 75% of Americans claimed to be church members
Today it is less than 50%
36% of Americans claim to attend church at least monthly. New Mexico is basically average in this statistic.
COVID has been hard on the church in America.
Average church down about 30%
Volunteers have disappeared.
As people return they are looking for a simpler program where they are not needed and can attend less often.
This may be the first crisis in America where Americans didn’t flock to churches and cry out to God.
-20 years ago after 9/11.
Is Church Important? Is it necessary for our lives?
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
4 Reasons Church is Important
1- Community (1-6)
1- Community (1-6)
God has created us for community.
It was not good for man to be alone. - Genesis 1
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
You cannot walk worthy of your calling alone. We are called to be part of the body.
Body of Christ- can’t exist without fellowship.
Look at intimacy of Acts 2:42-47
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
Ekklesia= community or assembly
used in secular society for the assembly of citizens for an important task or event.
There is a very important social aspect of church.
Church is a community different from the world.
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Supernaturally the closest community in the world.
14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.
15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
2- Teaching

6 Reasons Teaching From a Local Church is Important
A- Teaching Comes from Called and Gifted People (11)
A- Teaching Comes from Called and Gifted People (11)
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
All offices exist for the edification of the local church.
3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
B- Teaching Prepares for Ministry Within the Church (12)
B- Teaching Prepares for Ministry Within the Church (12)
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
We grow in our faith for the purpose of serving in the local church.
C- Teaching Brings Unity (13a)
C- Teaching Brings Unity (13a)
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
D- Teaching Points to Jesus (13b)
D- Teaching Points to Jesus (13b)
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
Accountability to reach the goal= being like Christ.
E- Teaching Builds Theological Foundation (14)
E- Teaching Builds Theological Foundation (14)
14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
Theological Accountability
F- Teaching is for Growth of the Body (15-16)
F- Teaching is for Growth of the Body (15-16)
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Church growth is not the result of compromise.
It is why we are sanctified.
3- Serving (16)
3- Serving (16)
16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Serving should be through the local church.
We each use our spiritual gifts to serve the world through the body of Christ.
10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
Physically and spiritually
We serve others physically for the purpose of having right to speak to their spiritual need.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
4- Worship
4- Worship
46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
In a sense worship is the above 3.
But it also something more.
15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Here I am referring to the expression of worship in a corporate worship service.
Worship is Surrender
Surrender by giving
Singing
Singing to God
Singing about God
For most people there is something humbling about singing around other people.
Sacrifice of praise
15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
Offerings
17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!
Surrender by receiving
Receiving God’s Word - agree with it.
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Repentance
Obedience - say “yes” to God’s Word.
21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.
24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
CONCLUSION
Jesus died for the church.
Are you committed to be part of the body of Christ?
Is church important to you like it is for Jesus?
