Last week, we dealt with Jesus being led into the wilderness by the Spirit!
His baptism and affirmation of the Spirit was a commissioning of fulfilling righteousness
Satan tried to attack
His Identity
His Commission
The wilderness proved what Jesus is made of
The wilderness exposed His BS (Belief System)
The wilderness is our example of a solid foundation
It’s very important that we realize that our commission is our assignment!
Assignment: a task or piece of work assigned to someone as part of a job or course of study.
Remember! we are His work of Art on Assignment.
We are God’s work in action, and we make God attractive
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.
And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness
Full: full (extent) adj. — complete in extent or degree and in every particular.
When I received the Holy Spirit, I’m full…
I have everything that I need of God in me!
Led: to be led (directed) v. — to willingly undergo an action or course of action (due to the influence of a moral or spiritual influence).
Just because we are full doesn’t mean that we are Led!
We have to willingly yield to the leading of the Spirit.
Jesus returns from the wilderness in the power of the Spirit
Power: possession of controlling influence; often understood as manifesting influence over reality in a supernatural manner.
The power / Acts 1:8
If Jesus is retuning to Galilee
Then He’s walking…
He’s walking in the Power of the Spirit - Walking in the Spirit
Text didn’t say (Jesus) returned with the power of the Spirit
It didn’t say that the power of the Spirit was in Him
Jesus was in the power of the Spirit
It’s the Spirit that has the possession of the power/controlling influence
That means that Jesus is in the possession of the Spirit
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
A divine appointment!
When your assignment meets your past environment
And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
No matter what you could say or accomplish!
People will praise you and still try to lapel you with associations
Is not this.....
Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”
The Spirit led Him to Satan
Then the Spirit led Him to Fake people that’s connected to his past environment....
And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘ “Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ ”
And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.
Listen to this! No prophet is acceptable in his hometown!
News flash! Working in your own hometown and household, will bring opposition.
You have to overcome labels that has followed your from a child!
The hardest thing to overcome is when people are “familiar with you”
They will focus on the messenger instead of the message!
Stay focused on the assignment!
And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him.... (Repeat)
And the blueprint for His assignment was given to Him.....
“He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written”
He unrolled the scroll - He open the blueprint
“Found the place where it was written”
He found the place from the blueprint that laid out His assignment…
The blue print was the word!
Unroll the scroll
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me”
Anointed: to anoint (religious) v. — to administer an oil or ointment to; often in a religious ceremony of blessing or dedication or consecration.
The spirit
Blessed - Made Holy
Dedicated - Devoted to a purpose or task …
Consecration: the action of ordaining someone to a sacred office
To an assignment...Sin does great damage, so there must be a great work of redemption. (David Guzik)
To preach the gospel to the poor: Sin impoverishes, and the Messiah brings good news to the poor.
To heal the brokenhearted: Sin breaks hearts, and the Messiah has good news for the brokenhearted.
To proclaim liberty to the captives: Sin makes people captive and enslaves them, and the Messiah comes to set them free.
Recovery of sight to the blind: Sin blinds us, and the Messiah comes to heal our spiritual and moral blindness.
To set at liberty those who are oppressed: Sin oppresses its victims
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD: This seems to describe the Old Testament concept of the year of Jubilee (Leviticus 25:9-15 and following). In the year of Jubilee slaves were set free, debts cancelled, and things set to a new start.
You have a piece to the puzzle!
