Being a Godly Friend

Parable of the Dinner

16 But He said to him, “A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;

17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come; for everything is ready now.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.’

19 “Another one said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.’

20 “Another one said, ‘I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’

21 “And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’

22 “And the slave said, ‘Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’

23 “And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.

24 ‘For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.’ ”

Parable of the Great Feast

15 Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!”

16 Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. 17 When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’ 18 But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’ 19 Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out. Please excuse me.’ 20 Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ 22 After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ 23 So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full. 24 For none of those I first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.’ ”

The parable of the great feast is originally intending to illustrate how God presented Jesus to the jews. First to the jews, who rejected him, and then to the gentiles, who embraced him.
It might also be used to illustrate how God invites people into his kingdom, not by their status, but by their willingness of the heart.
As humans, we judge people by how they look. Have you ever been rejected because you were too short, or ugly, or maybe injured, or even seen people at school who were left out because they were hurt, or had different needs. Or even some people who are in groups because some say they are more pretty, or have nice clothes, or nice shoes.
God says whether they’re crippled, or they’re strong, that it doesn’t matter. The Lord observes the inside. You should too! Next time you see someone, try to see them the way God sees them.
God can be met in their homes

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

47 It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ 48 You are witnesses of all these things.

49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”

“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.

1.) God wants to spend time with you (invite you in, and can meet you at home or anywhere you are.) (More than just reading your bible, it’s talking to God because he’s your friend).
2.) What can get in the way of God? Not everything is bad. Life is full of work, family, and fun. But God wants to be a part of that too.
3.) God wants to invite everyone to spend time with him! Even the poor, and sinners. Who are people in our city like this? (Homeless people, kids at school who are by themselves.)
4.) Who are people you can invite “to the table?”
Another idea is to identify the three types of spiritual relationships. Those who build us up, those we build up, and those that tear us down.
1.) Loving people show’s them, God’s love, and shows God we love him.
2.) We always help others, even if we don’t have money, or we’re young. (Listening to others, praying for them, being a good friend, etc.)
3.) God’s waiting for your “YES” to do miracles.

They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Context

Jesus is sitting at a table with the Jewish Pharisees, and they were watching him closely. He had already told some stories, and he told another story, about a man who hosted his own great feast.

Part 1

A man is throwing a great party.
He invites all his friends to attend, but they all have excuses.
One man just got a new piece of land that he wants to inspect, so he turned down the offer.
One man just got five new oxen, or a new car, and wants to try them out.
Another man just got married, and wants to spend the night with their wife, possibly going on a date.
God is inviting you to the kingdom of heaven. He wants you to be with him in heaven one day, and he wants to spend time with you right now!
Jesus wants to spend time with you wherever you are? He isn’t trying to nag you, but he is wanting you to join him in doing life together.
What God means to me. Now I don’t know about you, but I want God to be a big part of my life, because he keeps me strong, and guides, me, I can talk to him about anything, and we’ve even healed people who couldn’t walk. That’s someone I want to spend forever with!
If you’re friends with Jesus, can you raise your hand, and place it over your heart.
If you don’t know Jesus, and want to get to know him, go ahead and raise your hand.
That’s awesome! Well we’d love to introduce you to him! But sometimes things get in the way… you can put your hands down.
Maybe its sin, which is when we make God sad. (Lying, stealing, disobeying our parents.)
But maybe its something that’s not bad, but that we just choose to do without God. Maybe it’s school, maybe it’s friends, or play, or maybe its time at the TV, or even time with family.
None of these things are bad by themselves, but as we heard...

20 “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. 21 Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.

22 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.”

God is like someone standing at a door knocking, he’s wanting to enjoy life with you. So maybe next time you’re eating, playing, or spending time with family, you can invite God to join you!

Part 2

21 “The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ 22 After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ 23 So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full. 24 For none of those I first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.’ ”

Well, I just heard that all my friends I invited to come eat with me don’t want to. And I have all this delicious looking food up here! Well, if they won’t come, I’ll invite those who actually want it!
Just like the man who invited all the poor people into the party, God is inviting everyone! I invite the kids up to the stage.
God wants you to be at his party! But also, who else do you thing God wants in heaven?

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

God doesn’t judge by the outside, but by the inside.

47 It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’

Maybe the kids who sit by themselves in class? The homeless people on the street? We still have a lot of candy. Who are people we can invite to come to church, and meet God?
Allow the kids a time to respond
At the end of service, you guys will all get a piece of candy.
Now lets find a place around the room, and spend time to pray by ourselves for a bit. Talk to God, and ask him what might be in my way, and what I can do to spend more time with him. Be sure to listen to hear God speak!
Now I want you to pray for people who you might know you can tell about God, so they can spend forever in heaven too!
If you don’t yet know Jesus, find one of our leaders, and they’d love to introduce you to him!
Finally, let’s get into groups of about three or four, and I want you to share what God said to you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Bring up the table and the candy.
“Good morning boys and girls.
I’m here to taste test candy with people 15 years or older.
“Nick, would you be able to come up here?
I’ve got some delicious candy, and I think you’d really enjoy it! We can talk about the bible story, or maybe some football, and what’s going on!”
“Oh no, I’m too busy, I actually just bought a new car.”
“Well why don’t you come over, and you can tell me all about it!”
“Maybe some other time, I wanna take it to get a car wash.”
“Oh, okay.” looks around
“Hey farmer Boon!”
Would you want to join me at the table? We could have candy, and talk about your fields and tractors and stuff!”
“No thanks, I just got a new field, and I need to inspect it before work tomorrow!”
“Ah, okay...” looks around again “Oh!
Mr. Tim and Mrs. Sarah!”
Surely you guys would come to my candy! I’ve got it all prepared, so we can talk about the bible lesson, and you know we’ve been talking about godly friends! Everyone else has turned me down, surely you guys will come, right?”
“Ah, actually Colby, we’re thinking of going out on a date for something sweet.”
“But I have candy!”
“Yeah, not today, I think it should just be us tonight.”
“Alright, I understand.” Pause to where I’m sitting all by myself, looking sad.
I’m sad, but this reminds me of the bible story.
Kind of like the man invited his friends, and how I invited my friends, God is inviting you to spend time with him!
God talks to you, and God talks to me.
Explain how he talks,
But sometimes we’re too busy to hear him!
What gets in the way of spending time with God?
Take a few raised hands
Sometimes its sin. Do you guys know what sin is? Explain sin.
But sometimes even good things can get in the way of God.
Does God want us to love our family like Tim and Sarah? yes.
What do you like to do with family?
Does God want us to work hard like Farmer Boon? yes.
What is a chore or homework you have to do?
Does God want us to have fun like Nick? yes!
What is something you like to do for fun?
God’s talking to us, let’s respond.

Pray for What’s in the Way

So lets take a minute, and ask God, what might be in our lives that is in the way of him.

Part 2

“Well, I still need to taste… what should I do? Should I keep all the candy to myself? I know I said they have to be 15, but let’s invite a friend up.
Invite a friend, and explain how because we have God, and God invites us, we should invite others.
I’ll tell you what. If you guys go invite everyone else to come up, then at the end of service, Mr. Tim will give everyone a piece of candy! Do you guys like that idea? Okay, go invite them!
Mr. Tim comes to take the candy away on the cart.
In the same way that we gather around the table, and have candy to share, God is inviting everyone! But remember the servant in the story? The servant was sent to invite people for the master. Just like the servant, we should obey God, and invite others, just like we gathered around this table!
Who are people you can invite?
Transition into prayer.
I’ll say an opening prayer,
and describe prayer, and encourage the kids to find a place in the room to spend time alone with God.
Find a place around the room, and lets let the Holy Spirit, which is God, speak to us about who we can help. Leaders, if you want to join.
Leaders, walk around and pray out loud over kids, use their names if possible, and speak life into them. Ask them what God’s saying to them, and if you can pray with them.
Turn on worship.
Close prayer and come back together in groups based on age groups.
I’m here to taste test candy
My friends won’t join me
Reminds me of the story
God talks to us, and wants to spend time with us.
We’re sometimes too busy to hear God. What keeps us in the way of God?
Respond
What should I do with all of this candy?
Share it?
Because we know God, you should share with others.
